Clubhouse Eats: How to make the refreshing Sawgrass Splash, the signature drink of the Players

March 11, 2020

Welcome to Clubhouse Eats and Drinks, where we’ll introduce you to our favorite food and drink at some of the best golf courses, golf resorts and golfy locations around. Cheers!

There are a lot of ways to make a splash at the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, the water-laden layout that hosts this week’s Players Championship.

You could hook one. You could slice one. You could blade one. You could top one. Or you could do like Jerry Pate did upon winning the inaugural Players in 1982: after tossing two men into the lake on the 18th hole — course architect Pete Dye and then-PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman — he took a celebratory plunge himself. There’s a proud history of getting soaked around these parts. On the island-green par-3 17th hole alone, an estimated 100,000 golf balls go ker-plunk each year. Ouch.

But here’s a more enjoyable liquid option. Instead of trying to make a splash, have someone make a splash for you. As in, the Sawgrass Splash, the property’s signature cocktail, which marries a bracing blush of vodka with a medley of refreshing citrus. During tournament week, it’s available at any of the full-service bars and lounges on the grounds. But you can also order it year-round at the clubhouse bar. Served up over ice with a lemon wedge as garnish, it’s a delicious way to wet your whistle, and it costs no more than the sleeve of ProV1s that you just lost.

Sawgrass Splash recipe

– 1 1/2 ounce Grey Goose Orange
– 1/4 cups lemonade
– 1/4 cups orange juice
– 1/4 ounce lime juice
– Shake and pour over ice.
