Phil Mickelson benched for both matches Saturday at Ryder Cup

September 29, 2018

SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France — Phil Mickelson will not play any competitive golf on Saturday at the Ryder Cup. The 48-year-old Ryder Cup veteran, who lost his Friday foursomes match, was benched by captain Jim Furyk Saturday afternoon after already sitting out Saturday’s morning session.

Mickelson and partner Bryson DeChambeau got run over Friday by Sergio Garcia and Alex Noren, falling 7 down through nine holes. They were both benched for Saturday morning fourballs, and when pairings were released Saturday midday, Mickelson’s name was nowhere to be found. DeChambeau will have a new partner Saturday afternoon: Tiger Woods.

Phil Mickelson will sit both Saturday sessions at the Ryder Cup.

Mickelson and European Ryder Cup rookie Thorbjorn Oleson are the only two players to sit both sessions Saturday.

The only other time Mickelson was benched a full day at the Ryder Cup, mayhem followed. Mickelson and partner Keegan Bradley were famously sat Saturday at the 2014 Cup at Gleneagles, and Mickelson went scorched-earth on captain Tom Watson in the press conference that followed. (Although who knows how much steamed from the benching itself.)

Europe leads the U.S. 8-4 after three sessions. The complete pairings can be found below.
