Ahhhh, Pebble Beach. The granddaddy of all bucket-list golf destinations, and host of this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. So beautiful, so historic, so … expensive. Though it may turn out to be one of the most memorable rounds of your life, there’s no getting around the fact that a trip to Pebble Beach costs roughly an arm and a leg.

For true aficionados of the game, though, a Pebble pilgrimage is an essential must-do, at least once in your life. Here’s how much it will cost to make your dream trip a reality.

AIRFARE: ~$415

There are three airports to choose from when traveling to Pebble Beach. The closest is the Monterey Peninsula Airport (MRY), which is about 20 minutes away. San Jose’s International airport (SJC) is about an hour and a half away, and San Francisco (SFO) is about two hours away.

Monterey’s airport is small enough to require a layover from most East Coast starting points, so even though you’ll have a stop and a more expensive round-trip ticket, the additional cost of ground transportation from destination airports like SJC and SFO will almost even things out.

For a Friday to Monday itinerary I tried booking in late March, I found round-trip fares to MRY for $413 from JFK, $315 from BOS and $509 from ORD (prices via Expedia).

TOTAL AIRFARE: ~$415

GROUND TRANSPORTATION: $25

An Uber ride from the MRY airport will only set you back $25 each way — yay! If you’re going to Pebble strictly for the golf and resort experience, I don’t think a rental car is necessary. The resort shuttle is complimentary for guests and can take you everywhere you need to go on property.

TOTAL SPEND: $415 + $25 = $440

LODGING: $1,230+

This is the category of your trip where the numbers will edge a little higher than usual. The only way to guarantee yourself a tee time at Pebble Beach is to stay at one of the Pebble Beach Resorts, and there are three: The Lodge at Pebble Beach, the Inn at Spanish Bay and Casa Palermo. The least expensive of these three options is the Inn at Spanish Bay, which will set you back $820 per night. And you need to stay at least two nights in order to pre-book your round at Pebble. So, a three-night stay will set you back $2,460 on lodging — plus taxes and fees — but will enable you to book advance tee times at the Pebble trifecta: Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill and Spanish Bay.

Note: If you opt not to stay at one of the Pebble resort properties, you can still book a tee time at the courses. At Spanish Bay, you can book up to six months in advance, at Spyglass, three months, and at Pebble, one day. Resort policy allows two tee times to be booked per room, so sharing the room’s cost is definitely in your wallet’s best interest.

TOTAL SPEND: $440 + $1,230 = $1,670

GREEN FEES: $1,235

Beginning in April, green fees are increasing at Pebble by $25 per person, so if you can make it out there before then, you can save a tiny bit. Through March, a round at Pebble costs $550 for resort guests. Spyglass is $395 and Spanish Bay is $290.

Add it all together and you end up spending $1,235 in green fees.

TOTAL SPEND: $1,670 + $1,235 = $2,905

DINING: $340

With 15 restaurants to choose from between the three resort properties, you’ll have plenty of variety to look forward to. Here’s a budget breakdown to keep you on track:

Arrival dinner: $50

Day 1 golf course lunch: $30

Day 1 dinner: $50

Day 2 golf course lunch: $30

Day 2 dinner: $50

Day 3 golf course lunch: $30

Miscellaneous breakfasts and snacks: $100

TOTAL DINING: $340

TOTAL SPEND: $2,905 + $340 = $3,245

And there you have it! Flights, ground transportation, three nights of lodging, three green fees and dining at the one and only Pebble Beach for under $3,300! Ready to book? Happy travels!

This year’s U.S. Open venue, Pebble Beach Golf Links, is a bucket-list golf destination for anyone who loves the game, but did you know that there are three *other* top-notch tracks within the Pebble Beach Resorts family? That’s right. Spyglass Hill, the Links at Spanish Bay and Del Monte Golf Course also call Pebble Beach home.

Here are 15 things to know about Pebble Beach Golf Links’ stellar siblings on the Monterey Peninsula.

Though Pebble Beach Golf Links tends to steal the spotlight as the top-ranked public course in America, Spyglass Hill is not too shabby, coming in at No. 15 on GOLF’s most recent list.

Spyglass Hill is famous for its juxtaposition of ocean views and dense forestry. The opening five holes offer sweeping Pacific vistas and sand dunes while the closing 13 holes bring you back into the dense Del Monte forest.

Every year, the lucky golfers competing in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am get to play Spyglass, too.

Though Spyglass has yet to host a major championship, the course clearly has fans at the USGA. It has co-hosted the U.S. Amateur twice, most recently in 2018.

Legend has it that Treasure Island author Robert Louis Stevenson used to roam the dunes that later became Spyglass Hill while he sought inspiration for the famous novel. The Northern California Golf Association helped build Spyglass in 1966, and its name was even inspired by the book. NCGA Executive Director Bob Hanna then took the extra step of naming many of Spyglass Hill’s holes (Captain Smollett, Blind Pew, Billy Bones, etc.) after people and places in the book.

Spyglass was originally built to host Northern California Golf Association championships, and just one year after opening, it joined the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am rotation. Crosby himself famously bet Jack Nicklaus that he wouldn’t be able to break par in his first round at the course. The Golden Bear then shot a defiant two-under 70.

But back when the course co-hosted the 1999 U.S. Amateur, not a single player in the field managed to break 70.

In its previous life, the land that became the Links at Spanish Bay was utilized as a sand-mining operation. As it turned out, that sand base was useful in creating the links-like masterpiece.

Opened in 1987, the Links at Spanish Bay is the youngest course in the Pebble Beach Resorts family by two decades!

The rolling, links-like fairways at Spanish Bay were designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Tom Watson and Sandy Tatum to mimic Scottish links courses, and to further punctuate that point, players who finish their rounds at twilight are greeted by the sweet sounds of the course’s own bagpiper.

GOLF’s bi-annual ranking of the Top 100 Courses You Can Play has awarded the Links at Spanish Bay with the 47th spot on the most recent list.

If you’re wondering why this beautiful golf course doesn’t host more high-profile events, it’s because the environmentally sensitive habitat areas around it limit gallery traffic to 5,000 people — far too few for a major championship, or even a regular-season PGA Tour event.

Del Monte Golf Course is the oldest course west of the Mississippi, with its initial nine holes dating back to 1897! Nine additional holes were opened in 1902.

Del Monte hosted the inaugural California State Amateur in 1912, and has continued to host prestigious tournaments for over a century, including the Del Monte Cup, the Pacific Coast Open and the 1916 Western Amateur Championship. Current annual tournaments include the Monterey Open and the Monterey City Amateur.

At only 6,365 yards, Del Monte isn’t a long golf course. But small, sloping greens provide a more-than-adequate challenge.

The price to play Pebble Beach Golf Links is famously high, at $550, plus a $45 cart fee for non-resort guests. But its siblings offer more budget-friendly options.

Green fees for visitors to Del Monte are $110, plus a $25 cart fee.

At Spanish Bay, you can expect to pay a $290 greens fee, plus a $45 cart fee is added if you aren’t a Pebble Beach Resort guest.

At Spyglass, the greens fee is a more hefty $395, plus a $45 cart fee for non-resort guests.
