No golf fan will be surprised to see Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm or Rory McIlroy in this week’s Tour Championship field. Nor will the names of Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson and Bryson DeChambeau raise any eyebrows. But the PGA Tour has now whittled down its stars of the season to just a top 30, which means it’s time to get rid of our preconceived notions of golf’s best male players and see who has actually earned the right to be here.

There are major goodies associated with a top-30 finish, too: In addition to FedEx Cup winnings (which are significant), all 30 players at East Lake will qualify for the 2020 U.S. Open, the 2020 WGC-HSBC Champions, the 2021 Tournament of Champions (whether they won or not) and all four major championships in 2021. To some of these guys, that’s a major promotion.

Some golfers in the field were on the Korn Ferry Tour last season, while other names on the list might be wholly unfamiliar to a casual fan. Here are the five players in this week’s field who seemed least likely to get there.

5. Lanto Griffin

Brendon Todd emerged as the unlikely hero of golf’s fall season when he emerged from the depths of the yips to win back-to-back titles, and he’s actually now garnered enough attention to disqualify himself from this list. But because Todd worked his way onto everyone’s radar, a couple other golfers who got off to hot starts slipped through the cracks.

Enter Lanto Griffin. A year ago, Griffin was playing in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals and grinding to regain PGA Tour status. Once he got a taste of the big Tour, there was no turning back. Griffin, ranked outside the world top 200 at that point, finished 13th in his first start of the season at the Greenbrier, kicking off a run of four consecutive top 20s before he took the biggest step of all in a career-changing victory at the Houston Open.

It’s hard for any Tour pro to match that start to the season — six consecutive top-20s, including a win — so it’s understandable that Griffin came back down to earth in 2020. Still, he added three top 10s in the new year, including a T10 finish at this week’s BMW Championship to remind golf fans that yes, he’s still very much here.

Tour Championship starting position: 2 under

4. Cameron Smith

A year ago, Cameron Smith was dejected in wrapping up his 2018-19 season. The promising Aussie had so much success so early that a rough patch left him searching for a consistent 2019-20 season.

Well, he didn’t necessarily get that sort of consistency — but he got just enough to punch his ticket to the Tour Championship. What makes Smith’s trip to East Lake feel so unlikely is that he recorded just two top-10 finishes this season: A win at the Sony Open and a T3 at the CJ Cup last fall. Talk about making ‘em count!

Cameron Smith shakes hands with Brendan Steele after winning the Sony Open.

              Getty Images

“I’ve always been quite good at not giving up,” Smith said after his win. That’s a good quality to have in his line of work.

Smith, 27, is one of six members of the International Team from last year’s Presidents Cup to crack the top 30. That’s just one fewer than the American team, which saw seven of its 12 members make the field at East Lake.

Tour Championship starting position: Even par

3. Sebastian Munoz

Speaking of the Presidents Cup team, one player who wasn’t even seriously considered for that team was Sebastian Munoz, the 27-year-old Colombian who made his hay in the fall. After playing a mixed Korn Ferry/PGA Tour schedule in 2018-19, Munoz seized his earliest opportunities in the fresh season. He finished T7 at the Greenbrier and then won the Sanderson Farms the following week, instantly catapulting to the top of the FedEx Cup standings. A solo 3rd at the RSM Classic closed out his calendar year in style.

Sebastian Munoz picked up his first career PGA Tour victory at the Sanderson Farms.

              Getty Images

Munoz had such a strong fall, in fact, that his work was basically done by the time 2020 rolled around. Before the playoffs, he notched just one top-15 finish in 16 starts but was comfortably through, anyway. When he finished T18 at TPC Boston, he punched his ticket to East Lake. And when he finished T8 this past weekend — his best result of 2020 — he even picked up a couple extra shots for the Tour Championship.

Munoz enters the Tour Championship 15th in the FedEx Cup standings. For a guy who has never made a cut in a major championship, that’s a pretty huge season.

Tour Championship starting position: 3 under

2. Scottie Scheffler

Even casual golf fans have likely heard Scheffler’s name by now, but it’s worth hammering home just how good the PGA Tour rookie has been of late. When it comes to stars under 25, the trio of Morikawa, Hovland and Wolff usually get all the attention. That’s not the case anymore.

Although Morikawa has ascended to another level with a major championship win, Scheffler (No. 17 in the FedEx Cup) is ahead of Hovland (27) and Wolff (35) in the points list. (Sungjae Im and Joaquin Niemann, it should be noted, are each also in this age group and in the field at East Lake.)

Scottie Scheffler’s PGA Tour career is off to a hot start.

              Getty Images

In his last five starts, Scheffler has notched five top-25s, shot 59, posted a top 5 in a major and ascended to No. 36 in the world. That’s heady stuff for the 24-year-old, who was still on the Korn Ferry Tour a year ago this time.

Tour Championship starting position: 2 under

1. Mackenzie Hughes

What if I told you that a golfer who started the year with the following stat line somehow made the playoffs?

MC-MC-MC-T55-MC-T65-MC-MC-MC-MC-MC

An inauspicious start, right? But the great thing about the PGA Tour is that one hot week can change everything. Eleven starts into the PGA Tour season, Mackenzie Hughes had missed nine cuts and generally shown zero signs of life. He arrived at the 2020 Honda Classic low on hope and low in the world rankings — he’d slipped outside the top 300.

Then he finished solo 2nd.

It took a while for Hughes to back that result up; the Honda was his last start before the Tour’s hiatus. But since the restart, he notched a T3 at the Travelers and a T6 at the Memorial, sending him skyrocketing up the points list. The soft-spoken Canadian is hardly a household name, but he arrived in the playoffs knowing he needed two top finishes to make it to East Lake. A T13 at the Northern Trust advanced his case, and 71 strong holes at Olympia Fields left him on the cusp of qualification this week, too.

Mackenzie Hughes earned his way to the Tour Championship on Sunday at the BMW.

              Getty Images

Long story short, Hughes arrived at No. 18 needing a par; a bogey would leave him outside the top 30. After his approach shot found a greenside bunker, he knew just what he had to do.

“If this was just a Wednesday practice round, nine times out of 10 he’d get it up and in,” said NBC analyst Paul Azinger.

This was a Sunday tournament round, though, and one with major implications.

“Yeah, that was some of the most pressure I’ve felt in a long time,” Hughes said. A solid bunker shot left him with a slippery five-footer for par, and he rolled in the putt and punctuated it with a big-time fist-pump — the kind you rarely see in a T10 finish.

A 5-foot putt to qualify for next week.@MacHughesGolf's reaction says it all.

The Canadian has punched his ticket to the @PlayoffFinale!#QuickHits pic.twitter.com/pBhRKL7JsB
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 30, 2020

“You know, I’ve contended to win some tournaments this summer, and that kind of felt like the same kind of intensity on that putt,” he said after the round.

Tour Championship starting position: Even par, 10 shots back

The Tour Championship kicks off Friday at East Lake.

He almost didn’t make impact.

Griffin addressed his ball on the 182-yard, par-3 16th hole at TPC Boston. He took his 8-iron back during Thursday’s first round of the Northern Trust. He barely took it forward. He immediately and awkwardly stopped his follow through after hearing two slams at the top of his backswing.

In about three-quarters of a second, he started his swing, heard the noise, continued his swing and appeared to have tried to stop his swing.

The ball landed 26 feet, 11 inches away from the hole.

“Heard a bang at the top and scared me,” Griffin wrote on his Instagram account under a video of the tee shot. “Solid 8i that flew 178 to 25 feet but you could probably tell from the finish. #needtofocusbetter.”

Griffin looked to his right after the shot, took a step to the right, then looked forward as he held his club against his shoulder. Along the left side of the hole was water, and along the right were trees. Griffin’s ball went straight.

“Oh, isn’t that a follow through? Wow,” analyst Nick Faldo said on the Golf Channel broadcast.

Griffin rolled his birdie putt just to the right of the hole before making his par. He finished with a 3-under 68, then shot another 68 on Friday.

He almost didn’t take one of the shots.

Fresh off his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Houston Open, Lanto Griffin spoke to GOLF’s Jonathan Wall about the Titleist gear (and Sik Flo mallet) he’s currently using at the moment. The conversation ranged from his success with new Titleist irons in the bag to why his friend shouldn’t expect to get his putter back anytime soon.

You’ve spent time on the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour. Can you describe how different the equipment landscapes are in it? Is there more of a temptation to tinker on the PGA Tour?

Lanto Griffin: Yes and no. In my opinion, the Titleist guys, every time we get to a tournament, there’s four to six guys there that are willing to get on TrackMan, tinker if we need to. With Titleist, they don’t bring out drivers and new clubs every three months, like some companies do. So, for the most part, it’s making small changes.

The only difference on PGA Tour practice round days, there’s a lot more grip companies, shaft companies — they try and push new grips and this and that on you. And it was a little bit of a learning curve, just learning to say no. A lot of times in the first year on Tour, I’d have somebody come up and want me to try their grip and I’d be like, “Yeah, I’ll try it.” But I’m at the point now where I’m pretty good at saying no to stuff like that. The equipment I have right now is dialed in for me and I have no plans on changing anything.

What was the process like for you changing to Titleist’s T100 irons?

Griffin: Basically looking down at an iron or club that gives you the confidence to begin with. So that’s the first thing I look at, if I like looking down at it, I’m going to try it. So they brought out the T100 in Omaha on the Korn Ferry Tour. I want to say it was a Tuesday and I was going to go out and play nine holes, and so a couple of the Titleist guys were there, they brought the irons out and I hit, and this was true: I hit four balls with it and I was like, “Alright, they’re going in.” Four golf balls, they all felt good, and I went out and played with them, and I haven’t thought about it since.

I assume that’s the fastest equipment conversion in your career?

Griffin: Pretty much. But it’s funny, two years before when the new AP2 came out, I switched them the week prior to Nashville and then went on to win that week. Very seldom do I switch clubs or irons, but when they come out with something, they change little things. They don’t make drastic changes.

Any particular reason why you use the black version of T100?

Griffin: When I saw the launch of the T100, they looked awesome. I remember looking on Instagram and saw Cameron Smith — he had a set of black ones. So I reached out to the guys at Titleist and, and I asked them, “Am I eligible for those?” And they said, “Right now we’re very early in with the black iron and they’re only available to PGA Tour players.” I worked on them enough to where a dude I know at Titleist, he talked to the right person and he got me a set of them. Immediately they were in the play. Looking down at the black irons, it just fits my eye. My iron play has been great the last five, six weeks with them.

You have mostly new Titleist gear in the bag, but I noticed you still had a 917 D2 driver. Any particular reason why you’ve stuck with it?

Griffin: Driving the ball has always been a struggle for me. I’ve always been a long hitter, but I’ve always had a double miss. So right before they launched it TS2, I finally got tired of hitting a double miss, so I went to a cut, and I started charting my driver pretty much religiously. I got really comfortable with a cut with the 917 and then when they bring out the TS2, it was really tough because looking down the TS2, has a really cool look, the black head, it felt great. But I was driving it so well for the first time in my career, I didn’t want to make the switch.

I’m one of those players that if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. But I am curious about TS2. Maybe it fits me better, but I’m a little hesitant to try it because I’m driving it the best I have in my career. So it’ll stick with it for a while. I’m sure at some point I’ll give the TS2 a chance and it’ll probably just as good or better for me.

When did you start stamping your Vokey wedges with Talladega Nights quotes? And do the quotes ever change?

Griffin: My relationship with the Titleist guys is pretty special, they’re like family to me. Jim Olsen gave me a shot in 2008 when he brought me on staff, started giving me equipment for free when I was in college. Jimbo and I talk all the time. He came out on the range during the Korn Ferry Tour Finals at Victoria National and watched me hit balls and I was like, “What are you doing?” He said, “I’m doing my work.”I think it was four o’clock on Tuesday, and I said, “Well, do you want to take my wedges and go stamp something on them?” And he goes, “Yeah, what do you want?” I was like, “Your call buddy.” So he came back about an hour later — and we’re huge with movie quotes and always kind of joking around — and threw those four quotes on them. Every time I look down they’re hysterical.

I already got four new ones for the next set of wedges; they’re going to be Dumb and Dumber. When they come out, probably before the start of the year, I’ll probably change wedges, get some fresh grooves and we’ll have a new look for the stamps.

Any reason why you prefer a Vokey pitching wedge to a standard T100 version?

Griffin: The only reason I liked the pitching wedge in a Vokey is, when you get a wedge in your hand, when you have that rusted, the raw look, it feels like you’re in birdie range. So getting up over a ball and knowing you have a wedge in your hand, just the difference in a cavity-back versus the blade look, it gives me a little bit of confidence.

I think my gaps are a little bit better too. If I had a pitching wedge with a T100 I might hit it two to three yards further, which would increase that gap between my gap [wedge] and pitching wedge. So I’m comfortable hitting a three-quarter 9-iron and stuff like that. The gap between my 9-iron and wedge isn’t as important to me, but getting inside 155 yards, having a Vokey wedge in my hand I feel like I’m going flag hunting and then I got a good chance to make birdie.

When it comes to testing gear, how much are you weighing the launch monitor numbers versus what you’re seeing and feeling?

Griffin: The number one thing for me is feel and ball flight. If you sat there and watch guys like Jim Furyk, Daniel Berger, some unique golf swings, which I would almost put myself in that category a little bit. If you look at ball flights, that tells you more about a player than any number can possibly tell you. For example, I don’t really like to know a whole lot about what’s going with my shaft. I don’t really care cause I trust [the Titleist reps], they know how to fit me. If they tell them to try something, I’m going to try it. And then if it feels good and ball flight looks good, almost 99 percent of the time the numbers are going to be good too. So I rely a lot on the Titleist guys when making changes. Their opinions matter a ton to me.

Obviously, at the end of the day, it’s my decision what I want to play it. But I don’t think they’ve ever told me, “Hey, this shaft is perfect for you.”, the numbers are great and I didn’t like the ball flight, so it’s a team effort. The less I know about my equipment, the better. Cause I don’t want to switch, I don’t want to tinker with a new driver shaft when things are working for me.

How much time do you spend inside the equipment truck each week?

Griffin: I go in there mainly to take a break from the range and hang out with the guys. I’ll go in there every once in a while, check lies and lofts and make sure the gaps are the right. I’ll go in there once in a while if I need new wedges and talk to the guys. But usually, it’s just going in and catching up and trying to get a little bit of a break. We’re all friends. It kind of feels like you’re at home when the guys are there.

What’s the story with the Sik Flo mallet in your bag? That’s a putter you don’t see very often on Tour.

Griffin: When I turned pro in 2010, the first winter of playing mini-tours in Florida, and the Sik guys had just launched their putter line. I bought a couple of putters from them that I used for a couple of years. I felt really comfortable with them. I also putted great in 2017 on the Korn Ferry Tour with a Scotty Cameron 2.6 center shaft putter. Those are the only two putters I’ve used since I turned pro: Sik and Scotty Cameron.

Earlier this year I was really struggling with my ArmLock style, and my best friend came down for a Masters trip we do every year, and I missed every putt with my ArmLock and grabbed the Sik Flo putter out of his bag, which was actually the putter I got him fit for. So I was familiar with it. I had three or four of the same model back home, but they had different necks, different lies, different grips, and for whatever reason his clicked. And I asked him if he’d let me borrow to see if it worked. I won the first week with it. Long story short, he’s not getting it back.

The Houston Open was headed for quite the finish on Sunday afternoon at the Golf Club of Houston. Here’s what you missed.

Who won: Lanto Griffin (three-under 69, 14 under overall)

How it happened: Griffin led Mark Hubbard by one entering the day, but the final pairing was tied at 14 under at the turn on Sunday. Griffin bogeyed the 11th after a bad approach with a nine-iron and handed Hubbard the lead, but it turned into a three-way battle when Scott Harrington jumped into the mix. Harrington made four birdies (and two bogeys) over the final seven holes and took the clubhouse lead at 13 under. Hubbard bogeyed the 15th to make it a three-way at the top, but Griffin jumped ahead with a birdie on 16. Closing with the most difficult hole on the course, the 484-yard par-4 18th, Griffin drove it into the rough but found the green and two-putted for a one-stroke win over Harrington and Hubbard.

Why it matters: It’s the first career PGA Tour victory for Griffin, a 31-year-old who bounced around on the mini golf circuits for years. The Twitter account Monday Q Info broke down Griffin’s past, and road to Sunday, nicely:

Tom Lovelady, Lanto Griffin, Andrew Yun and Stephan Jaeger should never be accused of slow play.

The four PGA Tour rookies are now Guinness World Record holders, after they teamed up at the par-5 17th at Palm Desert Country Club in Palm Desert, Calif.

And it didn’t take this foursome long (no pun intended). They beat the record on their first attempt and then set it again on their fourth — coming in at 27.88 seconds. The record was previously held by Ian Poulter, Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick and Matthew Southgate at 32.7 seconds.
