Being able to get into the mind and discuss the game with some of the best golfers on the planet is always a thrill. This week after his win at the John Deere Classic I had the opportunity to speak with PGA Tour winner J.T. Poston about his recent hot play, his transition to the new Titleist TSR3 driver, and his plans to prepare for the Open Championship.

Below is a section of a full interview, which has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.

Ryan Barath: First off, congratulations on winning the John Deere Classic to mark your second win on tour. Was there something about your game that you felt was firing on all cylinders leading into the week?

J.T. Poston: There is never just one thing that I can put my finger on when I’m playing well, because it always feels like everything is just coming together. The great thing about playing well is that you feel like every part of your game is stress-free, and that helps create a lot of confidence. The one part of my game that I always have confidence in is my putting, specifically inside 10 feet, which flows into the rest of my game. When my iron game does get sharp, I can really take advantage of the opportunities I give myself. When you add in a few extra made putts in that 15-20-foot range, all of a sudden the scores get lower.

RB: Moving away from your putter, to the other end of your bag – you quickly made the switch to the new Titleist TSR3 driver at The Travelers Championship outside of Hartford. What is the transition process like when putting a new driver into play during the season?

              Titleist TSR heads from Travelers

              ryan barath

JT: Yeah, I mean to be really honest the process is easy for me. At The Travelers, the rep came over with one of the new heads on the range and I just put it right onto my shaft with a few clicks of the wrench.

The new driver looks very similar to my old one from address, so that gives me confidence when I’m looking down at it. As soon as I hit the ball-flight window I want to see, I’m ready to go. I even just put the head into the standard (A1) setting and immediately saw great numbers with a bit of extra ball speed, which I can always use. I have so much trust in the gear and the reps we work with on Tour, it makes a driver switch seamless.

RB: Now speaking of switching out gear, your win at the John Deere qualified you for The 150th Open at St Andrews. The one thing so many players talk about is making sure their wedges are ready for links golf – do you currently have any plans to do any wedge testing once you get over to Scotland?

JT: I don’t have much experience playing links golf, so I’m excited to get over there and get familiar with the conditions we are going to face next week. As for my wedges, were really lucky to have Aaron Dill out with us on tour and one thing he really tries to make sure when setting up our wedges is versatility built into our sets.

I like the way my set is built from my (SM9) pitching wedge down to my lob wedge, and since I already use a 60° (L-Grind) with just 4° of bounce I don’t think I’ll be going to anything lower for the conditions – but you never know. I’ve always used a lower bounce lob wedge to help get under the ball on tight lies around greens and the grind I use makes it easy to open the face and still feel like I can get under it which should help over there.

RB: Thanks for your time JT, and and good luck at The Open next week.

JT: Thanks Ryan.

One of golf’s busiest weekends has come and gone, and after four rounds of play, we’ve finally crowned a winner at the 2022 John Deere Classic. The quietest of the three golf events this weekend (next to the second LIV Golf Invitational and the Irish Open) produced a second-time PGA Tour winner and plenty of drama down the stretch. Below, find everything you need to know about the 2022 John Deere.

Who won: J.T. Poston (Two-under 69; 21-under)

How it happened: Poston entered the day with the 54-hole lead and never looked back, delivering a two-under 69 to close out a 21-under performance for his second-ever PGA Tour victory. With a three-stroke lead heading up to the 72nd hole, Poston delivered like he had all week at TPC Deere Run, zipping his final approach well clear of the water and onto the putting surface. With four putts to nab a victory, Poston needed only two, tapping in for par to close out a three-stroke win.

The other winners: Of course, Poston was one of three big winners from the world of golf this weekend. He was joined by Branden Grace (LIV) and Adrian Meronk (DP World Tour). While Emiliano Grillo and Christiaan Bezuidenhout (T2) weren’t winners, they also found their way into the Open Championship (alongside Poson) via their performances on Sunday.

Ticket to The Open: secured.

J.T. Poston earns his second PGA Tour title at the John Deere Classic at 21-under par. pic.twitter.com/KnlPE7d8Z3
— GOLF.com (@GOLF_com) July 3, 2022

Why it matters: It’s easy to forget — given the JDC’s comparatively weak field — that the winner of this week’s event receives an invitation to the 2023 Masters (like all other PGA Tour winners in 2022). But that’s likely one of the first things on Poston’s mind this evening. Poston, 29, has played in only one other Masters — a missed cut in November 2020 — and in 2023, he will get the opportunity to reach the weekend in front of a true Masters crowd.

Best celebration: Poston’s fiancee, Kelly, wasted no time getting into the winner’s circle to celebrate alongside her soon-to-be husband, sharing an emotional moment together on the 18th green.

“I think I honestly was more nervous,” Kelly said afterward. “I wasn’t there for the first win so this was so special for me. I’m so proud of him.”

Best meltdown: As a general rule, three-putt pars are frustrating. Three-putt pars while you’re in contention in an event that could alter the trajectory of your season? Now that’s downright maddening.

Or at least, Dylan Wu thinks as much. After a three-putt par on the par-5 10th on Sunday, Wu had one of the meltdowns of the year on the PGA Tour, a 40-second long diatribe that included a … rather scathing analysis of his performance for the week.

It sure wasn’t pretty, but it was certainly worth a laugh, and for that, we’re grateful.

Notables: Emiliano Grillo finished T2, falling just short of his first PGA Tour victory in seven years at the JD. Cam Davis finished T8. Christiaan Bezuidenhout finished T2. Maverick McNealy nabbed his first top-15 since the Genesis Invitational in February. Scott Stallings delivered an underwhelming final round to fall four shots back in his T4 finish. Sahith Theegala (T16) couldn’t overcome a weak opening round to recover from last weekend’s devastating loss at the Travelers, but still nabbed a top-20 finish.

Up next: A rare PGA Tour doubleheader between two co-sanctioned events: the Barbasol Championship and the Genesis Scottish Open (where our own Sean Zak will be on the bag for Joel Dahmen).

But seriously, Dylan Wu, tell us how you really feel.

We kid, of course. To be honest, we appreciate being let in on your inner monologue after a short missed putt during Sunday’s final round of the John Deere Classic. No, it wasn’t flowery. But it was sincere, and we like that. Over about 40 seconds on the par-5 10th at TPC Deere Run, we heard it all.

“Wu giving a little self-analysis of his putting this week,” the announcer on PGA Tour Live said.

Indeed. The sequence began after Wu was home in two, missed his eagle putt 6 feet to the left of the hole, then missed the birdie effort, too. He pounded his putter head into the green, and we’ll turn it over to him from here.

The 2022 John Deere Classic feels like it’s J.T. Poston’s to lose, after the 29-year-old has played his way into a 3-shot lead through 54 holes. Behind him is a three-way tie at 16 under between Scott Stallings, Emiliano Grillo and Denny McCarthy.

Poston is a one-time Tour-winner who torched TPC Deere Run earlier this week with an opening 62. Stallings has bagged three Tour victories in his career and Grillo has even won once during his rookie year back in 2015. It’s McCarthy who has never won on Tour, even if he’s been the man in contention lately.

It was McCarthy who hung around very late into the U.S. Open at Brookline a couple weeks ago, finishing T7, and at the Memorial tournament two weeks before that, finishing T5. A win for him Sunday would earn him a berth in the 2023 Masters, his first time competing at Augusta National. It would also bring in his biggest career payday.

Sunday’s winner will come away with $1.28 million of the $7.1 million total purse, while second place will clear just under a million, at $773,900. Check out the complete purse breakdown for the entire field below.

While we can’t predict a winner, it’s safe to assume a long drought will likely end. The final two pairings tell as much.

J.T. Poston, your leader, hasn’t won since 2019, and he’s paired with Scott Stallings, who is three shots back but hasn’t held a trophy since 2014. In the group behind them, and also three back, are Emiliano Grillo and Denny McCarthy; Grillo hasn’t won since 2015, and McCarthy has never won.

So yeah, it could be nervy. And it could be celebratory.

Greg Norman wanted to share some “interesting facts” with you. His tournament this week in Portland, the LIV Golf CEO wrote on Twitter earlier this week, had 21 players from the world’s top 100. And 17 of the past 50 major winners. And 10 of the past 24 major winners. And the competition had less. It’s here where we’ll note that he probably didn’t scrape through the data on his field, the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic field and the DP World Tour’s Irish Open himself, but you never know. Let’s continue.

Anyways, one of Norman’s newest employees summed it all up rather quickly.

“And how many major winners do you have here compared to John Deere?” Pat Perez said. “It’s not even close. The Tour wants to keep talking about strength of field and all that kind of stuff; the strength of field is here. So whether everybody wants to talk about it or not, that’s what it is.

“Facts are facts.”

#LIVGolf pic.twitter.com/hy3kx9Tx7j
— Greg Norman (@SharkGregNorman) June 30, 2022

Facts are facts. Scoreboard. You can’t argue the truth, and we can handle the truth. But facts, you see, can be selective. They can shape a story. And Norman and friends have conveniently forgotten to tell you all of it.

This was the week, wasn’t it, in this PGA Tour-Euro Tour v. LIV battle royale? Not only was the establishment going straight up against the upstart on American soil for the first time, it was doing so with one of its statistically ranked weaker fields in the JDC, as Norman wrote about and Perez boasted. If your golf news felt heightened over the past couple of days, more urgent, here’s your reason. Golf fireworks, on, yes, Fourth of July weekend.

And my friend texted me.

He does so often on the weekends when the golf is on. He enjoys a cup in the morning with the play across the pond, it’s on in the background in the afternoon. But this wasn’t about who I liked this week in Illinois, Ireland or Oregon. (Those texts were earlier.)

“A big reason I like to watch these guys play the John Deere this week is because a win for them is career-changing! Two-year exemption, huge amount of cash, get in Masters, etc.

“To watch a guy have to hold (or take) the lead in final round is lots of drama.”

I texted back that he had formed quite the take. Really, the John Deere?

“It’s true! To make a birdie or par on 18 or whatever to win is HUGE. Difference between exhibition and real competition.”

Facts are facts.

And here they are. Yes, the winner of the Deere gets the two-year Tour exemption. And the money; $1.28 mil. And the Masters berth. A spot in the PGA Championship, and one in the Open Championship in two weeks, too. And as the weaker field implies, every player could use every one of those perks. For a few, there’s a very real chance they won’t be playing golf on yours or my friend’s TV this time next year without them; only leader J.T. Poston has won over the past three years. Drama? Only if you like the life-changing kind.

Which brings us to the scene in Oregon. I’ve written in this space before that I see potential in LIV’s team aspect, and you could see that playing out on Saturday. Players who normally would be out of it weren’t, fighting for their Fireballs or Stingers or Fire Stingers or whatever. Money, big money, was on the line, and Branden Grace, the winner, won the most. And you may like that, and the TV cameras were doing a nice job of showing that a lot of folks were in Portland.

But the fact is — there’s that word again — all 48 will still get paid, and in most cases, paid well; remember, there is no cut, and the purses are ridiculous. Or, more accurately, they’ll be paid more. Remember, the stars signed for big sums for hitting any shot. Dan Rapaport captured this theme well in an excellent piece for Golf Digest, where he wrote that he complimented a player on a shot on the range, only for the player to snap, “Yep, it will.

“But, who the f**k cares if it doesn’t?”

OK then.

Funny, yes, but not exactly something you’d use in a commercial. Though this might be. Zach Johnson’s view below is heavily tainted. He’s pro-Tour, pro-John Deere, pro-started from the bottom now he’s here. (Sorry, Drake.) He, too, was once a no-name. And parlayed the Deere into becoming a household one. But if you’re looking for someone to tell you that even one of the Tour’s lesser-known events can hang with LIV, he’s your man.

“These kids are really, really good,” Johnson said Saturday. “I don’t know how else to explain it. I know we don’t have the top whatever in the whatever index or world ranking or whatever, but the guys here are really, really good and they’re hungry.

“So the quality of golf is going to be spectacular. Again, I can’t stress it enough, the guys you see here that win are going to be — they’re going to become the next whomever. That’s what we have here.

“I think that’s — we have that every week. That’s the difficulty. It’s impressive. That’s why the PGA Tour is the best.”

We’ll wrap this up truthfully. And on a good note. Back to the facts one last time.

You or my friend don’t have to choose on Sunday.

John Deere plays 72 holes and has one more round. LIV, as the Roman numerals tell you, plays 54 and is done for the week.

Denny McCarthy is having a career season on the PGA Tour.

Though he’s still seeking his first Tour victory, he’s already nearly doubled his winnings from last year, with a tally of more than $2.3 million, thanks to four top 10s this season — including a T7 at the U.S. Open.

The U.S. Open was only the sixth major of McCarthy’s career, and now he has his sights set on a berth at the Open Championship at St. Andrews in two weeks, which he isn’t currently qualified to play.

The good news? The top three finishers inside the top 10 at this week’s John Deere Classic who aren’t otherwise qualified to play the Open will earn a spot in the championship, so this week is an important one for McCarthy. After 36 holes, he was sitting in second, four shots behind leader J.T. Poston.

McCarthy credits his sold play to finally having the chance to rest a bit — though it happened against his will.

“I think I was just exhausted last week,” McCarthy said of his missed cut at the Travelers Championship. “I didn’t quite realize how mentally and physically taxing it is to be in contention at a major championship. That was my first time doing it. I was probably still running off a little adrenaline Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and I was just really tired last week.

“Honestly, you never want to miss cuts, but it was honestly — if I wanted to get into the British Open, which is what the goal is here this week, honestly probably a good thing I missed the cut last week. Coming into this week a little more fresh.”

The extra rest paid off, as McCarthy fired rounds of 66-65 (-11) to get himself in the mix for the weekend.

Though there’s still plenty of golf left to be played, McCarthy is hoping he’ll be one of the lucky three heading to St. Andrews — not that he’s letting the opportunity to play his first Open change his game plan.

“Just got to keep doing what I’m doing. I can’t pay attention to what [tournament leader Poston’s] doing,” he said. “I’m sure he’s going to come out and he’s going to have some good birdie looks. You know, I’m hoping to do the same.”

It’s pretty hard to follow a 62 on Tour, especially when you post a number like that in the first round. But J.T. Poston did an admirable job.

Poston now leads the field by four shots after 36 holes after firing a second-round 65. That’s 15 under par! The next closest player? Denny McCarthy at 11 under.

Poston has three top-10 finishes this season, including a T2 at last week’s Travelers Championship. But he hasn’t been able to add to his single PGA Tour victory, the 2019 Wyndham Championship.

Could this be the week? It’s looking good so far. Poston will play in the final pairing alongside McCarthy on Saturday afternoon.

You can’t get penalty-free relief if your ball is simply up against a tree. But you can get penalty-free relief if your ball is inside an animal hole.

So Dylan Frittelli started to do some rules math.

To set up the lively sequence during Friday’s second round of the John Deere Classic, the pro snap-hooked his tee shot left on the par-5 17th at TPC Deere Run, his ball looked to have finished at the base of a tree, and Frittelli called for a rules official. Though it was hard to tell on the PGA Tour Live broadcast where the ball exactly was, the PGA Tour’s Twitter account described the interaction as: “Dylan Frittelli and a rules official discuss a possible animal hole inside tree roots.”

And discuss they did. PGA Tour Live captured this part of the conversation, which was also shared by the Tour’s Twittter account:

Dylan Frittelli and a Rules Official discuss a possible animal hole inside tree roots. pic.twitter.com/zy7N000jg2
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) July 1, 2022

“OK, but if that hole goes 5 feet under the tree and my ball’s still 5 feet under the tree and I can’t reach it, then you don’t get relief?” Frittelli asked the official.

“That’s correct,” the official said. “Because you can’t make an argument that you might be able to play the shot.”

“I understand, but if this burrowing hole goes down another 6 feet and you’ve seen it go in that hole and it’s keeping the hole, you can’t play it, you still don’t get relief?” Frittelli asked.

“That’s correct,” the official said.

“Are you sure about that?” Frittelli asked.

“I’m positive,” the official said.

“So if there’s an ant hill …” Frittelli began.

“You’re inside the tree,” the official said.

“So if you’re in an ant hill and it goes buried inside the ant hill, you don’t get relief from that?” Frittelli asked. “You can’t hit it because it’s 5 feet inside the ant hill?”

“If there’s something that prohibits you from playing that shot, if that weren’t there, then you would not get relief,” the official said. “Such as a tree, a bush.”

At this point, Frittelli started to take his unplayable drop, and he eventually finished with a double-bogey seven.

“I disagree with the ruling,” he told the official. “I understand your interpretation, but I disagree with the ruling. I’ll still check after if you can have somebody there to speak to me after.”

So what gives here? Frittelli was looking for relief from an abnormal course condition — the animal hole — under Rule 16.1.

But the rules book spells out his case in interpretation 16.1a(3)/3, which states (deep breath):

“In deciding whether relief should be denied under Rule 16.1a(3) for a ball lying underground in an animal hole, the decision is made based on the lie the ball would have at the entrance to the hole as opposed to the ball’s position underground in the hole.

“For example, in the general area, a player’s ball comes to rest underground in a hole made by an animal. A large bush is immediately next to and overhanging the entrance to the animal hole.

“The nature of the area at the entrance of the animal hole is such that, if the animal hole was not there, it would be clearly unreasonable for the player to make a stroke at the ball (because of the overhanging bush). In such a situation, the player is not allowed to take relief under Rule 16.1b. The player must play the ball as it lies or proceed under Rule 19 (Ball Unplayable).

“If the ball lies in an animal hole but is not underground, the spot of the ball is used to determine whether it is clearly unreasonable to play the ball and if Rule 16.1a(3) applies. If Rule 16.1a(3) does not apply, the player is allowed relief without penalty under Rule 16.1b. The same principles would apply to a ball that is underground in an immovable obstruction.”

Or, in other words, the official was right.
