Darren Clarke, even at 53 and with a major championship to his name, was tinkering. Ahead of this week’s Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Champions Tour, he hit an iron on the range at Phoenix Country Club, lowered his club and looked at his ball a little longer than you normally would. He turned around.

Clarke, even at 53 and with a major championship to his name, wasn’t above counsel, either.

“Beauty there,” Vijay Singh said, then added:

“Watch your distance also.”

A couple of things to note here. Yes, Singh is a three-time major winner and a hall of famer, so it’s not as if Clarke was listening to your buddy who tells you to keep your head down. And the best talking shop with the best is always worth a listen. (It was just about a year ago where we documented even 86-year-old Gary Player picking the brain of 81-year-old Jack Nicklaus on the golf swing.)

In the video shared to the Champions Tour’s social media feeds, Singh was checking Clarke’s distance from the ball at address. Clarke stood over his ball again.

“I used to be more right there, Veej,” Clarke said.

Singh grabbed an iron. While a player’s distance from the ball is also based on their own comfortability, Singh showed he takes his right hand off the club and uses it to touch both his left hand and left thigh.

“I just go like, bam,” Singh said as he began his demonstration.

“I’m here, not here, you know,” he continued. “If I put my thighs, I just kinda feel that way, you know. If I’m touching it, I’m good. If I can’t reach it then … So you should have kind of like …

“One or two, yes,” Clarke said.

“Yeah, just whatever you feel comfortable,” Singh said.

“Yeah, exactly, whatever it is,” Clarke said.

Clarke turned to the camera.

“Hall of Fame tips,” he said.

Indeed. Clarke hit another ball. And the session between major winners continued.

“There you go, that’s freaking ripped,” Singh said.

In the aftermath of pro golf’s latest slow-play controversy that took place during the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the PGA Tour released a statement saying it would review its pace-of-play policy.

There have been several pros who have spoken out against slow play and slow players, and some have offered ideas on how to get rid of the problem. But there’s one main fix that most keep coming back to, and it’s what Darren Clarke said needs to happen in a recent interview with Reuters.

“Just give them [penalty] shots,” said the 2016 Ryder Cup captain. “The guys that are slow, give them shots and then all of a sudden they will figure out a routine where they can hit it within the time limit. It will stop in one week if they start giving out penalty shots.”

The Tour said it is now considering monitoring all players’ pace of play — not just those out of position — via ShotLink.

“We know that the individual habits of players when they are preparing to hit a shot can quickly become a focal point in today’s world, and our players and fans are very passionate about this issue,” said Tyler Dennis, the PGA Tour’s chief of operations, in the release. “We have leveraged our ShotLink technology to provide every player with a pace-of-play report that they can access, which breaks down the varying parts of their game and gives feedback on the amount of time on average that the player takes to hit a particular shot. We are currently in the process of reviewing this aspect of pace of play.”

On the PGA Tour, players are put on the clock if they are out of position and have between 40 and 50 seconds to hit a shot. They are given a bad time if they don’t hit a shot in the time allotted, with the first offense resulting in a warning and the second a one-stroke penalty and fine. But the PGA Tour has handed out just one slow-play penalty in the last 20 years, which came at the 2017 Zurich Classic, a team event. Last year on the Champions Tour Corey Pavin was assessed a one-stroke penalty.

Two weeks ago the European Tour announced its own four-part plan to improve pace of play. It includes stroke penalties and larger fines.

Darren Clarke began his first U.S. Senior Open with a frustrating first round 73 at Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame. The score wasn’t what he wanted (or needed) on a low-scoring day, but it wasn’t what it could have been because of a bizarre rules infraction by … his caddie.

Clarke had turned to the back nine after shooting one-under on the front, but flew his tee shot in the fescue trouble left of the 10th fairway. While meeting with rules officials to get a ruling, Clarke’s caddie did his best to uproot a bird feeder that was in Clarke’s line toward the green.

Can you blame him? A bird feeder would feel not much different than other movable obstructions like the ropes that keep fans from the fairways. But in this case, it was different. The bird feeders at the Notre Dame course were immovable obstructions, so Clarke’s caddie’s attempts were an infraction of Rule 16-1. Immovable obstructions only allow for relief when they interfere with the player’s stance or swing, not their intended line of play.

The @USGA ALMOST made it to July without controversy. Darren Clarke dinged for 2 for his caddie trying to remove a bird feeder.

Clarke would go on to make a bogey on the par-4 10th, but the penalty for the infraction was two stokes, adding up to a triple bogey for him, dropping him down to two over for the event.

Clarke finished his first round at three over, a brutal score on a day where scoring was incredibly low. Steve Stricker and David Toms both shot 8-under 62s. Tom Watson, ever the golfing machine, shot his age, 69, on a day where the scoring average was 71.50.
