Bill Murray and his pro partner D.A. Points did not play their best golf at this year’s AT&T National Pro-Am. Still, as is often the case at the annual tournament rife with celebrity golfers, Murray stole the show anyway with something you never see on the course: a no-look, walk-off rules violation.

The bizarre moment was captured by a fan watching the action this weekend at Pebble, and it’s been burning its way through the internet since, even making waves beyond the golf community.

In the clip, Murray is seen hitting a 15-foot right-to-left bender on what it appears to be the par-3 7th hole at Pebble Beach, with the Pacific Ocean looming behind him. He played far too much break in the putt, missing badly on the high side, but it’s what he did next that everyone’s talking about.

As his ball harmlessly ran passed the hole, Murray walked after it and then, with his back to the ball and the hole, knocked the still moving ball backward and directly into the hole. The crowd erupted into applause as the legendary comedian remained straight-faced and continued to walk off the green toward the 8th tee.

Murray’s nifty move was no doubt impressive but also a clear rules violation, though what the punishment should have been is less clear. The fact that Murray made a stroke and the ball ended up in the hole complicates the ruling.

According to Rule 11.2.c.(2), when a ball in motion is deflected or stopped by the player on the putting green, “the stroke does not count, and the original ball or another ball must be replaced on its original spot” with a two-stroke penalty added to the player’s score.

Since Murray knocked the ball into the hole and then moved onto the next — and did not re-take the putt from its original location as the rules require — it’s unclear what the correct punishment would have been: either a two-stroke penalty or a disqualification. Fortunately, Murray is a celebrity amateur and his group wasn’t in contention (though he and Points teamed to win the Pebble Pro-Am title in 2011), so getting the ruling exactly right didn’t matter, and everyone simply laughed and moved on.

It was reminiscent, however, of a moment that did matter, involving one of the best players in the game at one of the most important tournaments of the year.

At the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, Phil Mickelson pulled a Murray-esque move and stopped a putt that was about to roll off the green. Mickelson was widely criticized for the move, and the act easily could have ended in a disqualification, but the USGA controversially decided to charge him with a two-stroke penalty instead.

Whatever the correct ruling may be, the real takeaway from both of these incidents is this: unless you’re a beloved comedian playing in an exhibition event, don’t hit your golf ball until it completely comes to rest.

Famous athletes, actors, musicians and politicians are competing this week alongside PGA Tour players at the 2020 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The combination of star power and the Pebble Beach scenery creates a grand spectacle like nothing else in the world.

The unique yearly gathering of celebrity golfers also allows us to see what golf equipment some of the most famous people in the world decide to use.

1) Bill Murray

Bill Murray of Caddyshack fame has one of the coolest Sunday bags you’ll ever see. It’s a souvenir from Cypress Point Club, which is located just down the road from Pebble Beach on 17 Mile Drive, and it’s one of the most sought after tee times in the world.

This particular Sunday Walker bag is made by MacKenzie Golf Bags, and it’s magnificent.

Inside the Cypress bag is a Callaway Epic Flash driver, equipped with a Project X Even Flow Blue shaft, a set of PXG 0311 irons, and an Edel half-mallet putter.

2) Jake Owen

Jake Owen reportedly plays off scratch, but a recent wrist injury has him begging for more forgiveness. Due to the swing restraints, Owen told GOLF.com that he requested the Cobra reps build him “the most forgiving irons possible.” The result is this set of Cobra Forged Tec irons, which are equipped with graphite shafts.

Hopefully the increased forgiveness can help Owen live up to his 0-handicap this week, since he’ll be giving up a lot of strokes to the field as it is.

3) Condoleezza Rice

Former United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was spotted using the new Titleist TS1 driver, which is the lightest, most forgiving and highest-launching option in the new TS-family of drivers.

4) Macklemore

Rapper Macklemore, who you may know from his hit song Thrift Shop, probably bought this golf outfit from a thrift shop, but he certainly didn’t buy his golf clubs there. Macklemore was spotted using a new Titleist Scotty Cameron 2019 Teryllium T22 Newport putter, and he also has a set of PXG 0311 Extreme Darkness irons in the bag.

5) Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood, famous actor and former Mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, used a PXG driver during the 3M Celebrity Shootout on Wednesday. If you look closely, you can see that Eastwood has the heavier screw weights in the heel portion of the driver in order to add a bit of draw-bias.

6) Charles Kelley

Charles Kelley is a member of the country-music trio Lady Antebellum, and he’s using a TaylorMade Rossa Corza Ghost putter that has seen better days. Surely, Kelley makes enough money to afford a new putter, but trust in an old putter is something that can’t be purchased.

But, he could at least get the black alignment lines repainted, no?

7) Tony Romo

Tony Romo, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS announcer, is no stranger to competitive golf; he’s nearly qualified for U.S. Opens, and he’s played in both Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour events. In his bag, he has a Titleist SM7 Vokey wedge with his initials “TR” stamped on the back cavity, alongside Titleist Vokey Tour rep Aaron Dill’s initials. He also has a 58-degree custom Vokey grind wedge, a TaylorMade TP Ardmore 3 putter, a mixed set of Mizuno MP-20 irons, and a TaylorMade driver.

8) Eli Manning

Eli Manning, the recently retired two-time Super Bowl MVP of the New York Giants, also has a set of PXG 0311 irons, much like a number of his fellow celebrity participants. Some other quarterbacks in the field — Matt Ryan and Tony Romo — surely covet his Super Bowl rings and not his irons, however. Eli’s brother Peyton Manning is also in the field this week, and while he has two Super Bowl rings, he has only one Super Bowl MVP compared to Eli’s two; it’s not a competition, though (I’m a Giants fan, and it definitely is a competition).

When you really think about it, there are some similarities between golf and “The Bachelor.”

We’re certainly not arguing the stress of a rose ceremony compares to what you feel while standing over a match-deciding six-footer (let’s be honest, a rose ceremony requires MUCH more than nerves of steel). But we are asking you at least consider it.

There’s pressure to perform at a consistently high level, competition against yourself and others, and necessary skill to operate with efficiency and tact in a landscape loaded with hazards. All these characteristics are applicable across both environments.

It stands to reason, then, that Bachelor host Chris Harrison would be a natural among the celebrity competitors in the field at this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Harrison is a self-professed golf addict, even hosting a podcast with former NBC lead analyst Johnny Miller. His Instagram is a treasure trove of photos and videos diagramming his golf obsession (a two-for-one, if you’re a golf-loving “Bachelor” fan).

But Harrison isn’t the only celebrity contestant in the field at this week’s event, here are the best of the rest.

Eli Manning

The recently retired QB is likely making a beeline to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. But first, he’s heading out to Monterrey Peninsula to participate in this year’s Pro-Am. Manning is an avid golfer and frequent visitor at many of the Hamptons’ most famous tracks during the summer months.

Of course, should he stay in contention, we have little question about his ability as a pressure performer. Manning led 27 fourth-quarter comebacks in his NFL career, including a pair of come-from-behind victories in the Super Bowl. Now, if he can stick his ball on the greens at Pebble as well as his receivers can to their helmets, he’ll be in good shape this weekend.

Peyton Manning

Eli’s forgotten older brother, Peyton, is also in the field this week.

Of course, we’re kidding. The NFL’s preeminent forehead has already had an impressive second act to his football career with more than a few ties to the game of golf. Peyton is an investor in what might be the hottest track in golf, Sweetens Cove (as well as the origin of the club’s unofficial motto, “carrying my bag, playing nine holes, God bless America”).

He enters the week with a strategic advantage at Pebble, having traveled to the course over the summer while filming his ESPN+ show “Peyton’s Places.” While he’ll have to advance from Jim Nantz’s backyard par-3 to the real thing at Pebble, we imagine he won’t have a problem managing the heightened mental challenge.

Bill Murray

Apparently, Groundhog Day ended early for Murray, who we’ll assume is leaving Punxsatawney Phil in Pennsylvania. Murray, of Caddyshack fame, is back in the event this year after missing the cut in 2019.

When he’s not filming Super Bowl commercials or chasing rogue gophers, Murray spends his time helping run the William Murray Golf collection (a funky golf outfitter) with his brothers.

Jake Owen

The country music star’s golf fame might be most closely associated with being on the receiving end of Phil Mickelson’s epic wedding trash talk, but he’s a legit player in his own right.

Owen briefly pursued a career as a professional golfer before pivoting to his current profession. He and Jordan Spieth finished T10 at least year’s AT&T.

Kelly Slater

More often than not, Kelly Slater’s time away from surfing professionally at age 47 and being one of the world’s most impossibly cool athletes comes on a golf course.

Slater played the 2015 AT&T as a 3-handicap and was once called the World Surf League’s “most prolific golf geek” by the surf publication Stab Magazine. He even drew Adam Scott’s praise last year, with the Aussie saying that Slater’s golf game inspired Scott to lift his own game.

Wayne Gretzky

He’s “the great one” for his hockey career, but his golf career could probably earn him the title “the good one,” especially considering he never had formal golf training.

Gretzky told GOLF in 2016 that he’ll probably never be a scratch golfer, but he also won’t have to be a plus-handicap to stay in contention playing next to Dustin Johnson.

Bill Murray is a gamer. The guy can’t get enough golf, even when he should probably be taking a break. That much is clear from the Dunhill Links Championship taking place this week in Scotland.

Murray is taking part in the event as an amateur, and will tee it up Thursday, pending any lingering ailments from a car accident he was “involved” in earlier this week. The car Murray was escorted to St. Andrews in was part of a 4-car accident Tuesday afternoon. Our next sight of Murray came at the Old Course, where Murray was chipping one-handed, with his right wrist bandaged up.

The communication staff for the event announced that no one was seriously injured in the accident. Murray was even seen with an improvised sling made from a neck-tie.

If no one was injured, but Murray is fashioning his own slings, could it all be a comedic bit? Or is he actually hurt? We’ll have to wait until Thursday’s first round for some full-swing visuals. Until then, we’ll just appreciate his commitment to the game. There is no questioning that.

Murray is one of the leading celebrities — along with Justin Timberlake and Luke Wilson — taking part. As for his teammate, Murray is paired up with D.A. Points.
