Alex Levy took his driver back, then peculiarly lowered it back to address. He was simply lighting his fuse. Levy was even par heading to the 18th at the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open, the cutline looked to be five strokes better than that, and he had 500-some yards of wonderful green fairway in front of him.
Levy took his driver back again on Friday, then swung.
“Good drive,” his playing partner Joost Luiten said as he walked to the tee box.
“Oh, he hit that,” an announcer on the broadcast said.
In one of the better reactions to a drive you’ll maybe see, he knew it.
Levy averages just under 300 yards on his drives this season on the European Tour, but not on this hole. As his ball rocketed down the right center of the fairway on the 528-yard, par-5 at Meloneras Golf in Spain, he slightly popped up out of his stance, snapped his driver forward after a half-second follow-through and took three steps back and to the left.
He’d let even more out.
“Whoa,” Levy said.
He paused.
“Wow. Hoo, hoo.” Levy laughed.
He paused again.
“Hoo, hoo,” Levy yelled.
By this point, Luiten had lowered his head and was laughing.
“Hoo, hoo, hooooo!” Levy screamed.
“That is fantastic,” the announcer said on the broadcast.
Levy continued to laugh as he handed his driver back to his caddie, then would go on to birdie the hole. If you’re going to miss the cut, miss the cut with a bang. The European Tour posted a video of the drive to its social media accounts, and fellow pro Justin Rose gave it a fist-bump emoji on Instagram, while Romain Langasque wrote, “Let’s go,” with a rocket emoji.
On Twitter, Mike Lorenzo-Vera typed one word and two emojis of the word.
