PINEHURST, N.C. — A U.S. Open champion will be crowned later today on Pinehurst No. 2, but the only question remaining is who that might be.

Bryson DeChambeau heads into the final round seven under and leading Rory McIlroy, Matthieu Pavon and Patrick Cantlay by three, with Hideki Matsuyama and Ludvig Aberg both five back.

DeChambeau already has one U.S. Open title, which he won at Winged Foot in 2020. McIlroy is looking for his fifth major championship and second U.S. Open victory, although he hasn’t won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship.

Matsuyama won the 2021 Masters, but Pavon, Cantlay and Aberg are all in search of their first major title.

Whoever wins Sunday night will take home a record payday. The USGA announced this U.S. Open will offer a $21.5 million purse with $4.3 million going to the winner — the largest ever first-place check awarded at a major. The top-four finishers all win at least a million dollars, with the runner-up receiving $2.322 million.

Xander Schauffele won $3.33 million at the PGA Championship last month, and Scottie Scheffler won $3.6 million at the Masters in April.

You can check out the complete payout breakdown for the 2024 U.S. Open below, which you can watch on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET on USA and 12-7 p.m. on NBC.
