U.S. Open 2019: Watch Gary Woodland’s epic winning birdie putt, celebration at Pebble Beach

The massive crowds surrounding Pebble Beach’s idyllic 18th green waited all day Sunday to witness history, and Gary Woodland didn’t disappoint them. Woodland punctuated his incredible week at the U.S. Open with a birdie bomb on the final hole to claim a three-shot victory.

With Brooks Koepka having missed his own birdie try at 18 minutes earlier, Woodland arrived at the 18th tee with a two-shot lead needing only a bogey to win his first major title.

An iron off the tee found the fairway, avoiding Stillwater Cove which runs down the left side of the hole. Another iron for his second shot did the same, resulting in a perfect layup. From there, Woodland played it safe and knocked a wedge into the middle of the green, some 30 feet from the hole.

At that point Woodland could breathe a sigh of relief, because he only needed a three-putt to close out an incredible win. But he had one great shot left in him. With the whole golf world watching, Woodland curled in his 30-footer for an amazing finishing birdie.

As soon as the putt dropped, the new U.S. Open champion turned towards the grandstands and raised his arms to the sky as thousands of spectators erupted in applause. Check out the moment below.

The epic closing putt not only handed Woodland a three-shot win over Koepka, but it also moved his final score to 13 under. That’s the lowest-ever score to par in a U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, edging out Tiger Woods’ record from 2000 by one shot (to be fair, Woods won the 2000 Open by 15 shots).

Woodland then said his thank yous to his competitor and caddie, before heading off the green to celebrate with his family and a number of Tour pros who waited behind to congratulate the newly-minted major champion.
