The last time Phil Mickelson played a major championship in New York, things didn’t go well. Last summer at the U.S. Open, a frustrated Lefty made a 10 on Shinnecock’s 13th hole after intentionally hitting a ball in motion on the green. In a controversial ruling by the USGA, Mickelson was not disqualified.
Since then, Phil has been winning back fans with his entertaining social media antics and on-course prowess. He won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year, and finished second at the Desert Classic after shooting an incredible opening-round 60.
Mickelson has always been a fan-favorite in New York, and this year he’s taking another step toward appeasing the hometown crowd. On Monday, he debuted a new twist on the iconic “I love NY” logo on Twitter, and let’s just say it has a very personal touch.

In place of the heart in the logo, Mickelson created a silhouette of his profile. Clever!
No doubt Mickelson is eager to recapture some of the old momentum he’s enjoyed at Bethpage over the years. He’s been a runner-up twice when the U.S. Open was staged at the Black course (2002 and 2009), and he was T13 at the 2016 Barclays.
Mickelson tees off on Thursday at 1:38 p.m. ET alongside Rory McIlroy and Jason Day.
