Here’s what you missed from Round 1 of the 2020 Sony Open

January 10, 2020

The first full-field PGA Tour event of 2020, the Sony Open, is underway, and judging by the first day’s scoring, Waialae Country Club is playing just a bit tougher than last week’s venue, the newly-revamped Plantation course on the island of Maui. Play was ultimately suspended for darkness with over a dozen players still on the course, but none with more than three holes remaining in their first rounds.

Here’s everything you missed from Thursday’s action in Oahu.

Collin Morikawa leads by two

Young stud Collin Morikawa is coming off a T7 finish at last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions, and while he didn’t fire a round under 70 (three under par) in Maui, he got off to a great start in Oahu, with an opening round of five-under-par 65.

Morikawa’s scorecard included five birdies, and he was the only player in the field to get through the round without suffering a bogey. The 22-year-old is vying for his second career PGA Tour title, after winning last year’s Barracuda Championship.

Who else is in the hunt?

Matt Jones, Ted Potter Jr. and Ryan Palmer are two shots behind Morikawa at three under par overall, followed by a logjam of 10 players tied at two under — a group that includes Patrick Cantlay, Marc Leishman, Pat Perez and Brendan Steele, to name a few.

How did the big names play?

Last week’s runner-up, Patrick Reed, shot a first-round 69 (one under par) and is four shots back. Matt Kuchar is also at one under par. Justin Thomas, winner of last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions over Reed and Xander Schauffele in a playoff, made five bogeys and only three birdies en route to a round of two over par.

How can I watch Round 2?

One of the great things about Tour events in Hawaii and on the west coast is that east coasters have the ability to watch during prime time. On Friday, you can take in the Round 2 action from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. ET on Golf Channel.
