Tiger Woods’ duties at next week’s Genesis Invitational will extend beyond gracious host.

Woods announced via Twitter on Friday that he’ll enter the tournament as player as well.

Woods hasn’t played competitively since he teamed up with his son, Charlie, at the PNC Championship in December. His last start on the PGA Tour was a missed cut at the Open Championship at St. Andrews in July.

Last year, Woods said his goal for 2023 was to play in the majors and maybe one or two other events. The Genesis (Feb. 16-19), played at Riviera Country Club in L.A., was one of the tournaments many assumed he might consider, since Woods’ TGR Foundation runs the event and Woods is host. It’s also one of the PGA Tour’s 17 elevated events for 2023.

It was days after the Genesis Invitational in 2021 when Woods was critically injured in a single-car accident, later telling the media he nearly lost a leg. He missed all of 2021 but was able to compete, with the help of a cart, in the PNC Championship with Charlie later that December.

He played in just three events last season, finishing 47th at the Masters, withdrawing after three rounds from the PGA Championship and missing the cut at The Open, where he was given a memorable sendoff in what was likely his last competitive round at the Old Course, his favorite in the world.
