The bizarre way Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth are prepping for the BMW

August 13, 2019

With their spots in this week’s BMW Championship secure, the star-studded trio of Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth are focused on making a big move in the FedEx Cup Playoffs standings. But all three chose a bizarre way of preparing for the second playoff event together: practicing their lefty swings.

Thomas posted a series of Instagram stories on Monday night showing the three Tour stars and sometimes roommates (all of whom are traditional righties in golf), in JT’s words, “Messin around working on our lefty swings…”

Hitting off a mat in a hitting bay, Thomas and Fowler make impressive attempts, which you get to see in super slow-motion. Since they were hitting into a white sheet, we don’t how their shots actually performed, but their strokes seem surprisingly smooth and natural, and they appear to make pure contact.

Spieth, on the other hand, seems to struggle a little bit more with the awkwardness off swinging from his weak side (despite his preference for cross-handed putting). Check out a compilation of the swings posted by Golf Channel’s George Savaricas below.

At 15 and 17 in the standings, respectively, Thomas and Fowler are sitting pretty with one tournament to go before the Tour Championship. Spieth, on the other hand, has some work to do if he wants a spot at East Lake. Only the Top 30 players following the BMW Championship at Medinah will advance to the finale, and Spieth currently sits in 44th place.

A strong performance at Medinah, presumably with his natural right-handed swing, could earn him the right to fight for the FedEx Cup title next week.
