The opening round of the new PGA Tour season kicks off Thursday at the 2020 Safeway Open in Napa, Calif. Here’s what you need to know to watch the first round at Silverado Resort.
Previewing Safeway Open Round 1
One of the highlight’s of Thursday’s opening round will be Phil Mickelson, who is making his return to the PGA Tour this week. After getting knocked out of the FedEx Cup Playoffs following a missed cut at the Northern Trust, the 50-year-old surprised everyone by making his Champions Tour debut at the Charles Schwab Series at Ozark National, then surprised no one by winning it.
But we knew Mickelson’s sojourn to the Champions Tour would be brief, and now he’s back to add to his career PGA Tour wins resume, with one eye always on next week’s U.S. Open at Winged Foot. A solid round right out of the gate would give him some extra confidence and back up his senior circuit victory.
Mickelson will get his opening round started early on Thursday, teeing off at 10:30 a..m. ET (7:30 a.m. local time) alongside Shane Lowry and Brendan Steele.
