Rory McIlroy’s meticulous golf club locker is absolutely mesmerizing

January 2, 2020

Every golfer on the planet is envious of Rory McIlroy’s flawless golf swing and bank account. Well, you can now add one more item to the list of things that separates the four-time major winner from regular hacks: his meticulous equipment locker.

Still enjoying his offseason, McIlroy took to Instagram to post a photo of what has to be one of the tidiest equipment lockers we’ve ever seen. With five racks for his clubs and four drawers for headcovers and club-related items, McIlroy has more than enough space for the gear he’s used over the last six years, which is what’s represented in the photo.

Save for a brief period when he was an equipment free agent at the end of 2016, McIlroy was on staff with Nike and TaylorMade during the time period. Clubs from both manufacturers are well represented on the shelves, along with a few Scotty Cameron putters located on the right side of the fourth rack.

With Nike no longer in the hard-goods business, McIlroy’s Swoosh clubs are practically collector’s items at this point. A few of the Nike clubs also helped him win his last two major titles — reason enough to keep them around for the good vibes.

If there’s one thing that’s somewhat perplexing, it’s McIlroy’s decision to keep old wedges around. Most tour players change out the scoring clubs at least 3-4 times per year when the grooves start to go. At that point, there’s really no reason to keep them around. Or so you’d think.

In McIlroy’s case, he has more than enough wedges resting on the rack, which leads you to believe he’s stockpiling fresh grooves (unlikely) or just enjoys keeping sand and lob wedges from over the years on hand to remember the out-of-this-world shots he’s pulled off.

Either way, McIlroy doesn’t need to justify his reasoning for keeping old clubs on hand. Nearly every golfer has a hefty supply of gear sitting somewhere in his or her house. We’re all pack rats to some extent — even the ones with major championship hardware on their resumes.
