Throughout Patrick Reed’s lengthy pro golf career, controversy has tended to follow him. It’s why it was little surprise when Reed made the controversial decision to join the first wave of pros who ditched the PGA Tour for LIV Golf in 2022.
Reed is causing controversy again this week, but in a very different way. In a new interview, Reed praised the PGA Tour he once criticized and revealed he would “definitely” consider leaving LIV to return to the PGA Tour.

Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, has stayed busy since moving to LIV in 2022. In addition to capturing one LIV victory, he’s continued to play on the DP World and Asian Tours and to compete in golf’s major championships.
Just last year, he finished third at the Masters.
Before last week, the path back to the PGA Tour for star LIV Golf players was virtually nonexistent. But with the PGA Tour green-lighting Brooks Koepka’s return through the Returning Player Program, everything has changed.
Reed opened his year at the DP World Tour’s Dubai Invitational last week, where he finished 26th.
During the tournament, Reed spoke with The Telegraph’s James Corrigan, and Corrigan questioned Reed on whether he would consider leaving LIV to rejoin the PGA Tour, as Koepka did.
That’s when Reed began to provide his unexpected answer.
Reed first explained that he’s not eligible for the offer Koepka took because his Masters win didn’t fall in the 2022-2025 window required to qualify for the Tour’s Returning Member Program.
But if that rule changed, Reed openly admitted he would have to consider making the move.
“It’s not really a decision for me at the moment. I mean, that was for players [who won majors from] 2022 and on. [But] I definitely would have to think about it, if that number was [taken] down to 2018,” Reed told Corrigan.
When asked to clarify if that means Reed wants to play on the PGA Tour again, he answered explicitly, “Of course.”
He continued, “If it’s up to me, I’d play everywhere. I’m already playing on three tours [LIV, the DP World Tour and the Asian Tour], so why not add one more?”
Reed then proceeded to praise the PGA Tour and his experience there, where he won nine times, and confirmed he could envision himself returning someday.
“I always enjoyed my time out there on the PGA Tour. I mean, let’s be honest, it’s the best tour in the world. Look at what they’ve done in golf,” Reed said. “You know, I could see myself playing there at some point again.”
He continued: “You just never know. Everything’s so fluid, everything’s discombobulated in golf. But at the end of the day, whatever my name’s called, I’m going to show up and play and, you know, try to play the best and not only represent myself, but my family, and also whatever my team [is].”
Reed will pay fines to play DP World Tour after rule change
As previously mentioned, Reed’s appearance at last week’s Dubai Invitational was not a rarity. He’s regularly teed it up on the tour since joining LIV, and he’s enjoyed playing in Europe throughout his career.
In 2025, Reed played 10 DP World Tour events (not including the majors). However, while he’s permitted to compete in DP World events, he must pay a big fine to do so, reportedly as much as $1 million per season.
Over the past few years, LIV Golf has paid those fines for him. But beginning this year, Reed will have to pay the fines himself.
In his Telegraph interview, Reed committed to continue teeing it up on the DP World Tour despite the fines.
“Yeah, starting this year, the fines will go on the players, not on LIV,” Reed said. “I’m still planning on coming over and supporting [the DP World Tour]. This tour is unbelievable and I’m not gonna allow a couple fines to get in my way.”
He did, however, reveal his desire for LIV and the DP World Tour to resolve their differences so he can avoid the fines.
“I hope there is a resolution, I mean, especially for a guy who has always come over, always supported this tour. I’ve played in everything from the big events to the small events. I haven’t changed the way I’ve come over and played since I got my card over here.”
