‘Can’t look less cool if I tried:’ Max Homa wasn’t proud of his club-throwing moment

Safe to say a T39 finish was not what Max Homa was looking for coming off a win at the Farmers Insurance Open in his last start.

While Homa has developed a reputation as a rather light-hearted funny guy on social media, he’s also known to be intense about bettering his game.

On Sunday, some of the uglier side of the intensity showed up at TPC Scottsdale.

On the 6th hole during the final round of the WM Phoenix Open, Homa woefully mishit his approach out of the right fairway bunker, advancing the ball only about 100 yards and leaving another 79 to the green.

That’s when Homa, who started the day six behind thanks to a double bogey on his final hole Saturday, had an all-too-relatable moment. He chucked his club like a frisbee some 15 yards in front of him.

Homa failed to get up and down from the rough for his par afterward and the frustrating round continued with bogeys at the par-5 15th and par-3 16th before a spectacular tee shot on the drivable par-4 17th set up an easy birdie. Altogether it added up to a 72, his first over-par round on the PGA Tour since the CJ Cup in October.

But after the round, Homa seemed to take fault for his actions on Twitter, quote tweeting a video of the incident with, “Can’t look less cool if I tried.”

It’s easy for emotions to get the best of us in the heat of competition. For someone who has developed a following as big as Homa has, he made it clear that wasn’t his proudest moment. No one is perfect, good on Homa for owning up to it.

The self-deprecation didn’t end there. Tyrrell Hatton, who has been known to have a short fuse on the golf course before, chimed-in in the replies, offering to teach Homa the proper way to throw a golf club.

We don’t condone club-throwing of any kind here at GOLF.com, but if you are gonna do it, make sure you get some hang time on that sucker. Really make it memorable.

“I’m already nervous,” Homa replied.
