Larry David mocks Phil Mickelson’s U.S. Open history in new Phireside Chat

September 24, 2019

Phil Mickelson’s Phireside Chats have become one of the best weekly pieces of free content available on the internet. And this week, the Phireside Chat delivered better than ever. Enter: Larry David.

The award-winning comedian and actor is an avid golfer, and he and Mickelson played together last weekend before sitting down to chat about many things, one of them being Mickelson’s U.S. Open heartbreak.

After some playful banter back and forth, and after Mickelson thanked him for joining, David jumped in:

“Hey lemme ask you a question — you going to be playing in the Open this year? Or do you have a graduation coming up?”

After Mickelson confirmed his attendance at the 2020 Open, David cut in again.

“Ah, Winged Foot! Is that so? Winged Foot! Ah. Yes, I recall a previous Open there. Maybe 12 or 13 years ago. 2006…I remember on the 18th hole as you were teeing off, I remember you took a driver out of your bag. I must say, I was thinking to myself, ‘What could possibly be going through that idiot’s mind?’”

“Well, I could share with you,” Mickelson responded with a smile. “But I don’t know, either.”

Well put! Mickelson famously pulled driver and hit it into some trouble left of the fairway. It only got worse from there, and he ended up making double bogey when a par would have won the tournament.
