Is “Happy Gilmore 2” the most hotly anticipated golf movie sequel of all time?
Pardon the hyperbole, but for many millennials, the original “Happy Gilmore” was as formative a film as “Caddyshack” was for Baby Boomers and Gen X.
First released in 1996, “Happy Gilmore” stars Adam Sandler, and the movie was one of his first hits. Released just a year after “Billy Madison” — another Sandler-led millennial favorite — “Happy Gilmore” cemented Sandler as a goofball hero to the teen and tween set. Now, those fans are all grown up, Sandler is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and everyone is looking forward to seeing what Happy brings to the table nearly 30 years after the original debuted.
For those in need of a quick refresher, the original film showcases Happy Gilmore, a wannabe pro hockey player with an anger-management problem who discovers a prodigious driving ability. Aided by instructor and mentor “Chubbs,” who lost his hand in an alligator attack, Happy starts entering tournaments in a bid to save his grandmother’s soon-to-be foreclosed home. While Happy’s uncouth antics make him an immediate star on the pro circuit, he rankles the establishment — especially Shooter McGavin, the smooth-talking top player played by Christopher McDonald, who doesn’t take kindly to Happy’s encroachment on his turf.
The original movie is filled with zany characters and wacky storylines, and won legions of fans with numerous iconic lines (“Are you too good for your home?!“) and cameos from legends like Lee Trevino, Bob Barker, and Verne Lundqvist.
So what does the sequel have in store? Details on the plot are so far limited to this teaser text: “Adam Sandler’s short-fused legend swings for a comeback to make his kid’s dream come true.” A viewing of the trailer reveals that Happy decides to come out of retirement to pay for his daughter’s ultra-expensive ballet school.
Several core characters will be back, including Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, and McDonald. Notable cameos will include John Daly, Paige Spiranac, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Will Zalatoris.
