Fin Ewing might not be a name you’re immediately familiar with, but in Texas, its a name synonymous with golf.
Each summer, when thousands of juniors tee it up in tournaments hosted by the Northern Texas PGA, they compete on a tour sponsored by Ewing’s company. And while that may not seem significant at first, just know that the Ewing Automotive NTPGA Junior Tour is the place where some of the best Texans on the PGA Tour — think Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth — got their starts.
“What you’ve done with the North[ern] Texas PGA, sponsoring that junior golf tour, has just been incredible,” Colt Knost said on this week’s episode of GOLF’s Subpar. “You’ve done more for the game than pretty much anybody I know.”
Ewing’s contributions to the game in his home state are so significant that he was inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 2019.
How is it that Ewing came to be so involved in the junior golf scene in Texas? On this week’s episode of Subpar, he took a few minutes to explain.
“Randy [Smith] called me one day,” Ewing said. “He said, ‘Carl [Westcott] is not gonna [sponsor] the north Texas section anymore. I said, ‘That’s a shame. That’s too bad.’ He goes, ‘No it’s not … You’re gonna do it.'”
The next day, Smith arranged a meeting with Ewing and key stakeholders from the Northern Texas PGA. And now, 20 years later, the partnership between Ewing and the NTPGA is still going strong.
“It’s been on of the coolest things,” Ewing said.
