Neftlix, Full Swing
The golf world is used to the mechanics of Netflix’s “Full Swing“ by now. Producers flank every corner of the PGA Tour for a season, capturing as much as possible to document what happened, and then months later, they show you things you’ve already seen but now from new angles.
For the biggest golf fans, there isn’t much to learn that they don’t already know. Except, this season of “Full Swing” kicks off with a sneak preview about something golf fans can’t already know: this summer’s Happy Gilmore sequel.
Season 3, Episode 1 begins with a lot of behind-the-scenes footage from the set of Happy Gilmore 2, which we haven’t seen much of yet. We mostly know who is involved and who might play starring roles. Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau appear to be frontrunners for fateful scenes shot together.
However, there appears to be plenty made of the gold jacket, which was central to the plot of the first Happy Gilmore, which debuted in 1996. Mixed in through a montage of footage, there are clips of Jordan Spieth, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler and DeChambeau all wearing gold. Even Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele are rocking their jackets in what appears to be a dinner-party-gone-wrong scene.
While there’s no guarantee that these clips are destined to make the final cut, this was our best look at what may make its way into the finished product. Things like a grill room hang between Tony Finau, Bubba Watson, Will Zalatoris, Morikawa and the movie’s star, Adam Sandler. It would appear that Sandler — or rather, Gilmore — will compete alongside Justin Thomas for a few scenes. It also seems like we’ll get a comedic driving range session where Gilmore works on his patented, hopping driver swing in the hitting bay next to Scheffler.
Much of the action was captured during a few days of shooting in the fall at a golf club in New Jersey, and the ensemble of pros involved is impressive. However, the movie is being produced by a studio owned by Pro Shop, a media company in which the PGA Tour has invested. Pro Shop co-founder Chad Mumm is also the executive director of Full Swing, and Netflix is the distributor of the movie, so there is little doubt as to how the show was given automatic access to the set of a highly anticipated movie in the golf world. Nor to how a docuseries about the 2024 season begins with scenes from the end of 2024.
Nonetheless, this is the only place to get a preview of what is to come right now, and we are thankful for that alone. The movie is expected to arrive on Netflix later this year, but a firm release date has not been set.
