The scores are low in Silvis, Ill., at the 2024 John Deere Classic. The leaderboard was packed with contenders at the tournament’s halfway point, but on Saturday, Davis Thompson pulled away with a sizzling round of nine-under 62 to reach 21 under par and take a two-shot lead over his closest competitors, Aaron Rai and Eric Cole.
Five players are within four shots of the lead, but given all the red numbers on players’ scorecards, you could make the argument that players who are even farther back have a fighting chance on Sunday.
Eight of the top 10 players on the leaderboard are seeking their maiden PGA Tour victory, including the top three players heading into the final round: Thompson, Rai and Cole. That means, in addition to the winner’s check, the players can potentially look forward to all the perks a PGA Tour win entails, from job security to coveted exemptions and more.
The winner’s check is, of course, major perk of victory. And at this year’s John Deere Classic, there’s a nice payday in play: $1.44 million of an $8 million purse.
