Sam Burns heads into the weekend with a one-shot lead

Sam Burns lost a bet. Now he’s looking to win a tournament.
Playing with the letters RTR buzzcut into his hair (as in Roll Tide Roll, his payment for a lost wager to University of Alabama alumnus Justin Thomas), Burns himself went on a roll in Friday’s second round of the American Express, in La Quinta, firing a career-best 61 to take the lead heading into the weekend.
“Overall, just a really solid day,” Burns said. “I hit a lot of quality shots and was able to make some putts.”
He enters the third round at 17 under, one shot clear of Michael Kim, and two ahead of K.H. Lee and Nick Dunlap. World No. 6 Patrick Cantlay and PGA Tour 2023 Rookie of the Year Eric Cole highlight a group three shots back.
A win for Burns would mark his fourth consecutive season on Tour with a victory. He tees off with Seamus Power at 1:31 ET, on the Dye Course at PGA West. You can check out the complete Round 3 tee times below.
