It’s time for the 2022 Honda Classic, the long-running PGA Tour event that kicks off the Florida Swing. The betting odds for the Honda via BetMGM feature a pair of proven major champions near the top (though not leading the favorites), plus a whole lot of long shots ready to make a splash. Here’s what you need to know.
Honda Classic odds: This week’s favorites
Coming on the heels of the thrilling and star-studded Genesis Invitational in L.A., the Honda Classic’s field certainly has taken a hit, with many top-ranked pros taking a breather at home this week. But the betting favorites for this week feature names everyone is familiar with, including four-time major winner Brooks Koepka (+2200), 2019 Rookie of the Year Sungjae Im (+1200), Daniel Berger (+1600) and last week’s champion Joaquin Niemann (+1800).
But bettors would be wise to focus on another big name near the top of the odds list: Louis Oosthuizen. Shockingly, Oosthuizen has never won a regular PGA Tour event. But 2010 Open champ is a threat in every major he tees it up in, and one of these days he’s going to get his first win on American soil. At +1800 this week, Louis is as good a bet as any to lift the trophy on Sunday.
Honda Classic odds: Long shot of the week
With a lot of top players sitting out this week, the Honda presents the perfect opportunity for a longshot to rise from the depths and capture an unlikely Tour victory. The bottom half of the field is full of long shots, but one name jumps out: Brian Gay. Yes, Gay is 50. Yes, he’s missed his last four cuts on the PGA Tour. But there’s plenty to like in his profile for this week, especially with his odds-to-win sitting at +40,000.
Gay has accumulated five PGA Tour victories over his long career in professional golf, an impressive haul for anyone. It’s true that three of those wins came over a decade ago, but it’s his most recent win that bettors should be interested in. In November 2020, Gay ended an eight-year-long victory draught by winning the Bermuda Championship. He’s done it recently, can he do it again? If he did, you could turn a $100 bet into $40,000.
Sungjae Im (+1200) Daniel Berger (+1600) Joaquin Niemann (+1800) Louis Oosthuizen (+1800) Billy Horschel (+2200) Brooks Koepka (+2200) Tommy Fleetwood (+2200) Shane Lowry (+2800) Keith Mitchell (+3300) Alex Noren (+3500) Brian Harman (+4000) Matthew Wolff (+4000) Christiaan Bezuidenhout (+4000) Matt Jones (+4000) Aaron Wise (+5000) Cameron Young (+5000) Denny McCarthy (+5000) Gary Woodland (+5000) Jhonattan Vegas (+5000) Mackenzie Hughes (+5000) Mito Pereira (+5000) Russell Knox (+5000) Taylor Moore (+5000) Chris Kirk (+5000) Patrick Reed (+5000)
