Watch Jack Nicklaus surprise a shocked Rory McIlroy with the news he won Player of the Year
Rory McIlroy won three times in 2018-19, which included victories at the Players Championship and Tour Championship.
That, among other accomplishments, helped him win the 2018-19 PGA Tour Player of the Year award, which is voted on by the players. McIlroy won over Brooks Koepka, whom many thought was a lock to win the award with his PGA Championship title and top-four finish in all four majors.
McIlroy was shocked to win too. In a video the PGA Tour tweeted on Wednesday, Jack Nicklaus was sitting down with McIlroy and broke the news to him. After all, the Player of the Year honor is called the Jack Nicklaus Award.

“They’ve got one other [trophy] they thought they’d bring out to you today,” said Nicklaus, as the massive statue of his likeness was placed in front of McIlroy. “That’s the Nicklaus trophy.”
“I’ve already got two of those,” McIlroy said.
“You’ve got three now,” Nicklaus said. “Congratulations.”
“What?” McIlroy said, as the small crowd gathered around him began clapping.
McIlroy was shocked. “I’ve got goosebumps,” he said. That’s when PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan walked into the picture and congratulated McIlroy as well.
