WATCH: Phil Mickelson reveals he lost 15 pounds in 10 days to ‘reset’ his body for The Open

July 14, 2019

Phil Mickelson is usually pretty funny when he posts videos to social media, including his “Phireside with Phil” series. But on Sunday, Lefty took a more serious approach.

The five-time major champion took to social media to reveal that he’s lost 15 pounds in 10 days in order to “reset” his body ahead of the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland this week.

“Let’s get real for a few minutes,” Mickelson said to open up the video. “I haven’t posted anything because I haven’t been feeling good about himself and the way I’ve been playing, and so I haven’t wanted to do anything or be in public. The last 10 days I’ve done what I call a ‘hard reset’ to change and try to make things better.”

The 2013 Open Champion said that he lost the 15 pounds by completing a “six-day fast with water and a special coffee blend for wellness” and going on a retreat.

“I don’t know if it’s going to help me play better or not, but I’m willing to do whatever it takes to try to get my best back,” Mickelson said.

Mickelson’s last Tour win came at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am this past February, but he’s struggled since. He’s failed to make the cut at three of his last four events, including last week’s 3M Open. His last appearance in a major came at the U.S. Open in June, when he finished T52 at Pebble Beach.

Since his win this past February, Mickelson’s only other top-20 finish came at the Masters in April. Between the Pro-Am and Augusta National, Mickelson’s results were as follows: T37, T39, back-to-back missed cuts, and T40. He also finished T71 at the PGA Championship and missed two other cuts at the Wells Fargo Championship and Memorial Tournament in May. His only other top-10 this season came at the Desert Classic way back in January.

Needless to say, this season has been a struggle for Phil. But he can turn things around this week in the fourth and final major of the year, which is his most recent major championship win. Phil finished T24 at the 2018 Open Championship. Now, he’ll be going for major title No. 6 and Claret Jug No. 2.
