Olympic Golf odds to win: Collin Morikawa the favorite in Tokyo

After five long years of waiting, the summer Olympics are back in Tokyo, and with them bring the return of the men’s Olympic Golf competition. In just the second Olympics since golf’s grand reintroduction to the Games at Rio in 2016, a limited field of many of the best players in the world will compete for a gold medal in Tokyo.

Still, the Tokyo games bring with them a host of unique differences from 2016, chief among them being the venue. Unlike 2016, in which Gil Hanse was tasked with developing a golf course for Olympic competition, the Tokyo Olympics will be contested at a long-standing club on the outskirts of the city, Kasumigaseki Country Club. The course, which has been remodeled by both C.H. Alison and Tom Fazio in its 95-year history, has a long-standing tradition as one of the area’s best (and most exclusive clubs). It has hosted various junior and amateur golf events over the years, but certainly nothing to the degree of the Olympic Games.

As for the favorite to win at Kasumigaseki, that honor would belong to Collin Morikawa. The 24-year-old is fresh off the biggest win of his professional career to date at the Open Championship — the second major of his young career to date. What’s more, his putting (a long-standing weakness) was among his greatest strengths throughout the week at Royal St. George’s. A continuation of that trend could make Morikawa a scary player in the months and years to come. BetMGM puts him at 7/1 odds in the revamped field following the untimely exits of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau.

Some other big names to watch out for: Xander Schauffele at 9/1, Rory McIlroy at 12/1, and local favorite Hideki Matsuyama, also at 12/1.
