On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Subpar podcast, former Chicago Bears guard Kyle Long talked all things NFL with hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz, including, among other things, which PGA Tour pros he thinks could make it out as NFL players.
Long was a first-round pick out of Oregon in 2013 and played for the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs until last season. In other words, he knows a thing or two about what it takes to be an NFLer. His father, Howie, was a Hall of Fame defensive end for the Raiders teams of the 70s and 80s. His brother, Chris, was a fellow first-rounder and Super Bowl-winner in his illustrious NFL career.
So, who does he think could survive at the highest level on the PGA Tour?
“I’m gonna put Tony Finau at tight end,” Long started. “I’m going to put [Scottie] Scheffler at DE, and Finau at TE and we’re going to have a nice third-down matchup there.”
With Scheffler and Finau in the trenches, Long began to think about the perimeter.
“I’d put Rory in the slot, and I’d probably put Max [Homa] somewhere out there,” Long said. “But he’s got that jaunt about him when he walks, I don’t know if he’s a good sprinter.”
So there you have it, an NFL team of Scottie Scheffler, Tony Finau, Max Homa and Rory McIlroy.
