U.S. Open 2019: Jim Nantz to join Joe Buck during Fox’s third round broadcast on Saturday

June 15, 2019

Golf fans who tune in to watch Saturday’s third round of the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach will hear a familiar voice: Jim Nantz.

Golf’s lead anchor at CBS Sports, who happens to call Pebble Beach home, has never called a U.S. Open before in his broadcasting career. Well, it looks like that’s about to change.

During Fox Sports’ broadcast of the first round on Thursday, fellow play-by-play man Joe Buck invited Nantz to join him in the booth over the weekend.

“C’mon Jim! Please?!” Buck said during the telecast. “Join us here in the booth whatever day, whatever time works for you. We’ll make it work for us.”

It appears that Nantz has accepted the offer. Buck broke the news on Twitter during Saturday’s third round that Nantz will be coming on at 4:45 p.m. ET/1:45 p.m. local time.

Fox has the broadcast rights for the U.S. Open through 2026 as part of a 12-year deal with the USGA. Before Fox, it was NBC and ABC who broadcasted the national championship. Never in Nantz’ 30-plus years working for CBS has his network aired the U.S. Open.

But it looks like Nantz will soon check another marquee sports event off of his broadcasting bucket list. And when the broadcast rights for the U.S. Open become available in 2027, when the event just so happens to return to Pebble Beach for a seventh time, perhaps Nantz will be on the call again, one way or another.
