Koepka on slow play issue: The best players in the world are taking their sweet time

Brooks Koepka has generated plenty of headlines since he morphed into this new, outspoken Brooks, and he stayed true to form in the most recent episode of Feherty, which airs Monday night on Golf Channel.

In one segment, David Feherty asks Koepka about his thoughts on slow play. He had previously said officials don’t have “the balls” to call slow-play penalties, but added this time that the tricky part is that the best in the world aren’t necessarily fast players.

“These rules officials need to take it in their own hands and actually penalize us,” he said. “I mean, you penalize this [14-year-old] kid at Augusta (Guan Tianlang in 2013), but professionals who are doing it week in, week out [aren’t penalized]. A lot of the guys are notable guys, and that’s part of the problem. I think a lot of the guys that are the best players in the world are taking their sweet time.

“Listen, you know what, I got to embrace the role I’m in,” he continued. “You’ve got to be outspoken, especially when you are one of the best in the world.”

Ever since the calendar turned to 2019, the three-time major champion has used his platform to openly speak his mind. In addition to attacking the slow-play problem on Tour, Koepka has addressed Sergio Garcia’s outburst in Saudi Arabia and told a radio show that Patrick Reed apologized to teammates after the Ryder Cup.

The ninth season of Feherty kicked off last month with Fred Couples joining the show. Koepka’s entire episode will be aired at 9 p.m. ET on Monday on Golf Channel. You can watch the excerpt from the Monday episode below.
