Your cell phone can be a great swing aid, says top teacher. Here’s how

I’d bet that 99 percent of people reading this have a cell phone within arm’s reach of them at this very moment. Considering we all use phones for pretty much everything these days, from directions to recommendations on lunch spots, why not take advantage of your phone to improve your golf swing, too?
But I’m not talking about filming your swing or using it to track your stats, because GOLF Top 100 Teacher Ed Oldham says that using your cell phone in the golf swing can do so much more — you just need to know how make it more versatile.
As you’ll see below, Oldham explains how to do just that!
How a cell phone can fix common golf swing flaws
“We all have cell phones, so when you’re not scrolling Instagram or sending a text, try using yours to improve your golf swing,” Oldham tells me.
While it might feel weird to try without a club and golf ball, Oldham explains how a cell phone can fix your slice.
“If you slice the ball, there’s a good chance your clubface is open,” he says. “So I want you to hold your cell phone in your right hand, make a backswing, and pretend you’re taking a picture of someone standing behind you. By feeling this motion, it’ll help you extend your right wrist and help the clubface become more square.”
Oldham then describes the feeling you should have on the downswing to correct your swing path coming into impact.
“For the downswing, hold your cell phone in your left hand, stop halfway down, and now pretend like you’re taking a selfie,” he adds. “This is going to help you create a feeling of flexion in the lead wrist, which will also help you improve your clubface control.”
Lastly, Oldham says your cell phone is a simple way to control your ball-flight, too.
“Looking to hit a higher trajectory shot near the green? Pretend that your cell phone is resting on your clubface and that you cannot let it fall off,” Oldham explains. “This feeling will help you maintain loft through impact, allowing for a higher trajectory shot and a softer landing angle.”
While there are plenty of ways to fix some common swing flaws at the range, by taking the advice from Oldham above, you can work on your golf game from anywhere thanks to the versatility of your cell phone. Who knew?
