Rickie Fowler’s 3 keys to foolproof chipping around the greens

January 30, 2020

As much as every golfer would like to think they are a world-class ball striker, most of them are not. And even the best ball strikers in the world miss their fair share of greens.

Last season, Corey Conners led the PGA Tour in Greens in Regulation percentage, finishing the season hitting 73.06% of his greens. That means he missed an average of five greens per round for the entirety of the season. When even the best players in the world are missing upwards of five greens per round, and still putting up eye-popping scores, it becomes all the more apparent how important having a command of your short game really is.

Rickie Fowler, like all Tour pros, has a proficient short game that has guided him to five-career wins. Despite his success, he has only finished in the top 20 in Greens in Regulation Percentage once in his career, meaning he has found ways to score even when his ball striking isn’t completely dialed in.

In a recent video from TaylorMade, Fowler gives some quick tips on his approach to chip shots around the green. Here are the three things he tries to focus on when chipping.

1. Put the ball back in your stance

Fowler explains that for the basic chip shots he likes to have the ball more in the back portion of his stance. If he were trying to get the ball more elevated, the ball position would be more in the center or front portion of the stance.

2. Quiet the lower body

Another important thing to keep in mind on these shots is quieting the lower body, or keeping it still. The backswing is almost all in the upper body.

3. Chest facing the target

Once you transition into the downswing and through impact, it’s important to turn and have your chest facing the target.

Follow these trusted tips next time you miss a green and you’ll see your scores drop in no time.
