Q: Dear Chef, I’m good on long chips but not the short ones. What’s the best way to chip it, say, five yards?” —Sam T., Houston
I hear this a lot from my amateur students. The best way that I’ve found to hit that five-ish-yard chip is to use a slightly less lofted club (a GW, PW or 9-iron instead of a SW or LW), stand closer to the ball, raise the handle up high, take a putting grip and make more of a putting stroke. This helps “quiet” your legs and keep your hands passive as well, the combo leading to less force and a shorter shot.
