This Top 100 Teacher’s at-home drill will improve your golf swing pivot

We all want more distance and better accuracy. Lots of golfers think you can only get that by beating balls at a driving range, but that’s not the case. The key is a good pivot — something you can improve your technique from home. That’s good news, because we’ve all spent a lot more time working from home over the past year.

At the end of the day, the way we boost our swing speed is to fling our arms and club with as much speed as possible. And, of course, we need to make sure we fling them in the proper swing direction, too.

Here’s a drill that can help you achieve both proper swing direction and enhanced speed. Yes, it looks a little silly, but it works and it’s convenient! Here’s how it works

1. Backswing

Pull your arms out of the sleeves of your sweater or jacket, get in your golf setup position, and make a full backswing pivot. You should be turning fast enough that the sleeves on your shirt, fly straight out.

2. Transition

Once your backswing pivot is complete, begin turning towards the target as you pivot forward before your sleeves fall back to your side.

3. Downswing

Turn through aggressively. Do not let them fall down at any point once you start your motion. If you do this correctly with speed and correct timing, the sleeves will stay stretched out and look like propellers working around you. The trail sleeve will  look like it’s being flung toward the target as it passes over the golf ball.

If you want to know what it feels like to truly start your downswing from the ground up, and build up effortless power in your swing, using this drill for just a few minutes a day can teach you how to use your pivot to fling your arms for tremendous speed and repeatability.
