As GOLF Teacher to Watch Lucas Wald often says, “the engine of the golf swing is in the middle,” so having a strong core that can help generate the power you’re looking for will lead to more power. This means properly incorporating your core, quads and glutes into your swing sequence.

But developing core strength doesn’t just happen overnight, so understanding what drills and exercises you can do to strengthen this part of your body is key to hitting better golf shots.

While we’ve highlighted moves for better core stability before, another effective exercise comes from GOLF Top 100 Teacher Cameron McCormick, who shows how an exercise ball can be your secret to a stronger core — and longer shots!

How to engage your core in the golf swing

As McCormick shows in the video, the best players in the world understand the importance of using their cores for power.

The core initiates from the top of your backswing to the downswing, turning the upper and lower body through impact. It’s the key to maintaining good posture and keeping your sequence intact.

To get the feel for this power move, McCormick suggests trying a stability drill by using an exercise ball against a wall, adding some pressure to the ball with your back.

“Now we’re going to simulate the backswing,” McCormick says. “I want you to drive your right glute back into the [exercise] ball, then I want you to move the ball along the wall the distance you need to get your knee and your hip over your foot. Then explode to a full finish.”

Using this drill will show you how to engage your core in the swing, while also building the necessary strength to hit more bombs!
