This article has been updated to clarify the relationship between GOLF Magazine/GOLF.com and True Spec Golf.

It’s 2020. We can all agree that clubfitting is important, if not critical. But what constitutes a proper fit, and, more important, where should you go to get one?

GOLF’s got your back, as we introduce the Top 50 Clubfitters in North America. With the help of industry experts in the fields of club manufacturing, data technology and professional teaching, GOLF looked at more than 240 individual clubfitting companies, with an internal panel ultimately focusing on half of this group to determine the Top 50. In addition to experience and reputation, fitters rose or dropped in the ranking depending on certain operational criteria, one of the most important being that the fitting location was brand agnostic with access to clubs and shafts from a wide variety of manufacturers. Locations that offer both indoor and outdoor fittings with the capability of building sets in-house were favored over those who don’t. As you can guess, outfits that meet industry standards in data capturing (i.e., Trackman and Foresight) also received a rankings bump.

One of the biggest differentiators that resonated with the panel was the use of proprietary fitting systems. For example, GOLF’s sister brand, True Spec (No. 1 on the list, below), uses Club Conex, a hosel-adapting system that allows any shaft to fit into any driver head. This helps eliminate any variables in a fitting session and best identify the ideal setup for each player. Additionally, working with top-level golfers from the PGA and LPGA tours helped nominees garner trusted validation for their processes and builds.

The top 5 fitters on this list performed exceptionally well across the board in GOLF’s evaluations, checking nearly all criteria boxes deemed important by the panel. That said, all of the fitters who made the top 50 come with our recommendation.

Why did True Spec, which is owned by GOLF’s parent company, 8AM Golf, earn the No. 1 fitter status? With 30 locations worldwide, True Spec has worked with LPGA and PGA Tour players, major winners and standouts in every major sport. It has indoor and outdoor fitting capabilities to help fitters evaluate the entire scope of a golfer’s game, including ballflight and turf interaction. True Spec also has a vast staff of trained clubfitters, and not only does it use Club Conex, it owns it, helping to control custom builds in-house without outsourcing (as does approximately 70 percent of the fitters on the list who rely on the technology).
