Tillinghast actually turned down this project, thinking there wasn’t enough room to build good holes in the narrow valley floor. That speaks volumes about William Flynn and his ability to find solutions to tricky problems. The course famously finishes 3-5-5-3 but the entire back nine captures the allure of valley golf. The long 12th, with a creek down the left, has long been regarded as one of Virginia’s finest holes.
