A sweeping view of the 11th green at Los Angeles Country Club.

Anticipation is already high for the upcoming 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, which is hosting the national championship for the first time. On Tuesday, the USGA added more hype by releasing the host courses for both the local and sectional qualifiers.
There are a total of 109 courses hosting 18-hole local qualifiers in the United States from April 17 to May 22. Entrants will find course options in 44 states and Canada.
Final-stage qualifying (sectionals) will be held at three international sites (England, Japan and Canada) and 10 U.S. sites. Sectionals begin in England on May 16 and end on Monday, June 5.
Think you have what it takes to qualify for the U.S. Open? Online registration begins on Wednesday, February 22 (click here to register) and ends on April 12. Amateur entrants must have an official USGA handicap index of 1.4 or less.
Last year, the USGA received 9,265 entries to play in the U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. — several hundred entries shy of the 2014 record tally of 10,127 hopefuls for Pinehurst No. 2.
It may seem like a long shot, but it is possible to win the U.S. Open by starting out in a local qualifier. Ken Venturi did it in 1964, and Orville Moody followed in 1969.

As a four-year member of Columbia’s inaugural class of female varsity golfers, Jessica can out-birdie everyone on the masthead. She can out-hustle them in the office, too, where she’s primarily responsible for producing both print and online features, and overseeing major special projects, such as GOLF’s inaugural Style Issue, which debuted in February 2018. Her original interview series, “A Round With,” debuted in November of 2015, and appeared in both in the magazine and in video form on GOLF.com.
