Tiger Woods makes big scheduling announcement for the next month

May 23, 2019

We had to wait a month after the Masters to see Tiger Woods play again, but the post-PGA Championship wait will be much shorter. Woods added two events to his schedule on Thursday, committing to play next week’s Memorial Tournament in Ohio as well as the U.S. Open in June.

Woods made the scheduling announcement via tweet Thursday morning.

The Memorial is held annually at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. The event is hosted by 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus, who also designed the course. That makes it one of the biggest non-major events every year.

Woods is coming off a disappointing missed cut at the PGA Championship, where he shot 72-73 over the first two rounds to finish at five over. But this might be the best event for Tiger to experience a return to form. Woods has a phenomenal history at the Memorial, winning the tournament five times in his career.

His last Memorial victory came seven years ago during the 2012 season. At the time, Woods was in the midst of another comeback from injury. His first win at Muirfield Village happened all the way back in 1999. At last year’s tournament, he made a Saturday charge but closed with an even-par 72 to finish T23.

In the same tweet, Woods also committed to play next month’s U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, the site of his historic 15-shot victory there in 2000.

The Memorial kicks off Thursday, May 30, and runs through Sunday June 2. Woods will then take one week off before making his way to California for the start of the U.S. Open on June 13.
