Viewer’s guide: 2020 Sony Open tee times, TV schedule and purse

January 8, 2020

The 2020 Sony Open, the second PGA Tour event of the new year, begins Thursday in Hawaii. You can find full Sony Open tee times, along with everything else you should know about the tournament, at the bottom of this post.

2020 Sony Open preview

While it may be the second tournament of the year following last week’s Tournament of Champions, the Sony Open represents the first full-field event of 2020. Instead of the 30 Tour winners who competed at Kapalua, the Sony features a field of 144 players all vying for the trophy at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

Defending champion Matt Kuchar captured his ninth PGA Tour victory at the Sony in 2019. He’s back again this year and will tee off for the first round at 5:40 p.m. ET. Kuchar will be joined by arguably the two hottest players on the planet: Justin Thomas and Brendon Todd. Thomas took home the title last week at the TOC, and Todd finished out 2019 with back-to-back wins.

Also in the field are two stand-outs from December’s Presidents Cup. Abraham Ancer (12:10 p.m. ET) impressed International team captain Ernie Els in Australia, despite his loss to Tiger Woods in singles. The other, Patrick Reed (1:00 p.m. ET), has dominated headlines for over a month. Reed is coming off a runner-up finish last week.

If the new year is not enough motivation to play well, all American and European players will have extra inspiration in the form of Ryder Cup points. All year long they will be trying their best to rack up as many points as possible to earn a spot at Whistling Straits later this year.
