Solheim Cup heating up as Europe takes narrow lead into Saturday afternoon

With three sessions out of the way, the 2019 Solheim Cup is starting to get serious. The U.S. and European teams once again locked horns Saturday morning over four foursomes matches, with each team coming away with two wins.

After being separated in Friday’s afternoon session, Jessica and Nelly Korda were reunited again for another foursomes match Saturday morning. And, once again, the star sister duo proved to be a formidable team.

The Kordas, who won their first foursomes match with a dominant 6 and 4 score, faced off against the European team of Carlota Ciganda and Bronte Law on Day 2. Somehow they improved their winning score from Friday. The sisters went 3 up through eight holes, and then made three-straight birdies on holes 11-13 to close out the match early. The final score: 6 and 5.

The other American win on Saturday morning came from the team of Morgan Pressel and Marina Alex. Pressel and Alex went down big early against Annie Van Dam and Anna Nordqvist, losing four of the first six holes to fall 4 down.

But then the momentum shifted entirely in favor of the Americans. Pressel and Alex went on an incredible stretch winning seven out of nine holes, including five in a row, to pull off a comeback win of 2 and 1 and earn another point for their team.

But it wasn’t all bad news for the European team. Georgia Hall and Celine Boutier defeated Lizette Salas and Ally McDonald 3 and 2, with the U.S. pair winning only one hole in the match. In the fourth Saturday morning foursomes match, Americans Megan Khang and Danielle Kang were 6 down before they won their first hole of the day, eventually losing 4 and 3 to Charley Hull and Azahara Munoz.

The total score after Saturday morning’s session at the Solehim Cup was 6.5-5.5, with Team Europe holding a narrow one-point lead. Now the teams will reset and then embark on four more matches Saturday afternoon in the four-ball format. Interestingly, the successful Korda duo will not be paired together Saturday afternoon. In fact, both players will sit out the session entirely.
