The clubhouse at Machrihanish Golf Club, the legendary course in southwest Scotland, was destroyed by a fire Wednesday afternoon. No one was injured, according to local authorities.
Fire crews arrived around lunchtime and have worked into the night to tame the fire, but the building will not be salvageable. The club steward and his family also lost their home in the blaze.
“We at Machrihanish Golf Club would like to express a sincere thank you to all who have helped and provided their support to the Club today,” the club said in a note on Facebook. “From those who helped to remove as much memorabilia as they possibly could from the lounge early on to all the offers of help and support received.”
Machrihanish was founded in 1876 and its course was designed in part by Old Tom Morris; it is ranked No. 88 in GOLF’s latest Top 100 Courses in the World ranking. While the course appears to have been unaffected, the classic clubhouse that overlooked it will not survive.

Just beyond the fire in the above photos is the Macrihanish pro shop, the western seaboard of Scotland and what many call the greatest opening tee shot in the world. The club is located on a very remote peninsula, in which Glasgow is a three-hour commute via hilly country roads, or a 45-minute trek via airplane.
