Thinking of dipping into the Caribbean? In the Dominican Republic, the golf has real bite—and so does the chow.
Golf
Casa de Campo, in La Romana, is sublime. The resort features three Pete Dye courses: The Links, Dye Fore and Teeth of the Dog (No. 48 on our list of the Top 100 Courses in the World). Punta Espada G.C. at Cap Cana is a Nicklaus stunner that some judge to be the best in the Caribbean. Obviously, it’s a must-play.
Culture
In winter, you can get a true sense of Dominican life by taking in a Caribbean League baseball game. The atmosphere is unlike anything stateside from America’s favorite pastime. If a ballgame isn’t your thing, take a walk on the pearly-white sand beaches or chase marlin in the crystal-clear Atlantic.
Eats
Fresh is the word when it comes to DR cuisine. Some of the world’s finest fruit is literally hanging at your fingertips, and you still won’t get enough of it. If you’re a fan of coconut and fish, you can’t go wrong with the popular Dominican dish Pescado con Coco. And Quipes, a Middle East–influenced fried snack, is a must-try Caribbean staple.
