Clubhouse Eats: How to make the perfect Arnold Palmer beverage

March 4, 2020

Welcome to Clubhouse Eats and Drinks, where we’ll introduce you to our favorite food and drink at some of the best golf courses, golf resorts and golfy locations around. Cheers!

It’s Arnold Palmer Invitational week at Bay Hill, and even though we are over three years removed from the King’s passing, his enduring legacy continues to be at top of mind for players and fans alike.

While fan-favorite Rickie Fowler will be showcasing a number of specially-curated tribute apparel items to honor Palmer this week, there’s another way to remember Arnie, whether you’re onsite in Orlando or simply watching from home: enjoying the King’s signature namesake beverage, the Arnold Palmer.

According to Palmer’s website, the Arnold Palmer beverage was born sometime in the 1960s, when Palmer asked his waitress for an iced tea mixed with lemonade. A woman at a nearby table overheard his order and requested “that Arnold Palmer drink” for herself. The rest is history.

Opinions vary on whether to use sweet tea or regular iced tea (that’s more of a personal preference), but the ratio of tea to lemonade is of the utmost importance. While Palmer’s AriZona Beverage Company product bills itself as half iced tea and half lemonade, Palmer himself was a bit more specific about his ratios.

Check out this old ESPN commercial, featuring Palmer mixing his own Arnold Palmer beverage.

In the tongue-in-cheek spot, you can see Palmer starting with about a third of a cup of iced tea before he moves on to lemonade, finally topping off with yet another dose of iced tea, making his drink approximately 67 percent iced tea and 33 percent lemonade.

So there you have it! Follow Arnie’s example above to enjoy a refreshing beverage that is truly fit for a King.
