Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson to donate portion of profits from ‘The Match’ to charity

October 24, 2018

When Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson get together for their head-to-head match over Thanksgiving weekend next month in Las Vegas, they’ll play for a winner-take-all $9 million purse. They’ll cut big checks to charity, too.

Their respective managers announced that Woods and Mickelson will each donate a portion of the proceeds to a number of charities of their choosing, according to GolfChannel.com.

Steve Loy, Mickelson’s manager, said that Lefty plans to donate to three different charities: Mickelson’s own foundation, the Children of the 58 fund and the Las Vegas Shriners.

Launched in 2004, the Phil & Amy Mickelson Foundation focuses on supporting youth and family initiatives. The Children of the 58 fund was started last year in response to the Las Vegas mass shooting last October and provides college and trade school scholarships to the children of the victims.

Loy also said that Mickelson, Woods, and the PGA Tour will donate a portion of the event’s media rights fees.

Meanwhile, Woods’ manager revealed that Tiger would donate to his own foundation and other unspecified local charities.

Tiger’s foundation aims provide educational resources for students in need.

The much-anticipated showdown between Woods, 42, and Mickelson, 48, will take place on Friday, Nov. 23, after at Shadow Creek Golf Course.

Despite their charitable efforts off the course, Tiger and Phil will not be so charitable to fans and spectators who want to watch the action. The showdown will reportedly not be open to the public, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Instead, it will reportedly be open to sponsors and VIP guests.

The event is also expected to be played during the day, despite previous reports that it would be held in primetime. No official announcement has been made on the timing.

The match will be streamed on a variety of platforms such as B/R Live, AT&T’s DIRECTV, AT&T U-verse, and other on-demand services. Pay-per-view pricing has not yet been released.
