Brandt Snedeker fired a five-under 65 in the final round at Sedgefield CC in North Carolina to win the Wyndham Championship.
It represents Snedeker’s ninth PGA Tour victory, but it didn’t come easily.
Storms on Saturday interrupted his third round. When play halted, Snedeker, who shot a historic 59 Thursday, held a three-shot lead. But he still had 11 holes to play in Round 3.
Snedeker woke up early Sunday and finished off a third-round 68 to secure a one-shot lead through 36 holes. Groups teed off in threesomes off both tees for the final round. Snedeker played with Brain Gay and David Hearn and got off to a hot start. He birdied three of his first eight holes to get to 19 under.
Meanwhile, Webb Simpson challenged the lead with an incredible Sunday performance. But a bogey at the last ended Simpson’s run. He finished with a 62, three shots behind the winner.
C.T. Pan, playing with his wife as his caddie, made a run at Snedeker as well. But a drive out of bounds at the 17th set up a double bogey. He tied for second with Simpson.
Snedeker reached 20 under for the second time with a birdie at the par-5 15th hole. He never looked back, making birdie at 18 for a three-shot victory.
The triumph marks Snedeker’s first on Tour since 2016. Snedeker is a longtime national team player, competing in multiple Ryder and Presidents Cups for the United States.
Time will tell if his impressive performance convinces Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk to give him a captain’s pick for September’s Ryder Cup.
The win vaults him to 30th in the FedEx Cup standings. That means he’ll have more opportunities to impress captain Furyk in the coming weeks.
Coincidentally, Furyk fired a 63 in Sunday’s final round to finish T4, four shots back of Snedeker.
