Tom Watson in contention, three shots back at Senior British Open

July 28, 2018

Despite a struggling finish, 68-year-old Tom Watson is in contention through three rounds at the Senior British Open. That alone is significant enough.

Watson shot 73 Saturday and is six under for the event, just three strokes behind Miguel Angel Jimenez. It’s a deficit that could be even tinier had Watson finished stronger. The golf legend reached 10 under after notching a ridiculous eagle on the fifth and a birdie on the sixth.

He remained at 10 under through 13 holes but made a double bogey on 14 after his second shot landed in a bunker. Watson was forced to play his way out of the bunker and hit a hybrid into the green with his fourth. He missed the green, shorted a chip and two putted for a seven. He then bogeyed both 16 and 17.

What would a win mean for the 68-year-old? It’s hard to even fathom. Just four players between Watson and Jimenez. He’ll tee off in one of the final few groups Sunday with a chance to make even more history at the Old Course.
