There are quite a few different schools of thought on how to select the right irons for your game.

Most of which come from players who refuse to get fit, because yes, that’s always the correct answer. However, there are lots of golfers who spend lots of time online looking through articles, forums, news feeds, and social media to find their answers.

One big question? Should more golfers play blades? If you had asked most folks at the end of the 2025 PGA Tour season, the answer probably would have been an astounding no.

“Rory just switched to cavity backs.”

“More and more Titleist staffers are going into the T-series every week.”

“Combo sets are the way to go.”

That’s all fine and good, but so far in 2026… quite a few big names are leading the way with blades in the bag, including World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, a switch BACK to blades for World No. 2 Rory McIlroy, and two-time winner in 2026 Chris Gotterup. The one common theme for these guys? They’re all PGA Tour professionals.

The Ridiculous Argument

The most common and most ridiculous argument that I hear for the average golfer to hit blades is, “You’ll learn how to hit the ball better if you start using blades right away.”

This is absurd. Golf is hard. Really hard.

Why are we encouraging players to start off on the most unforgiving foot possible? Even modern blades like the new 2026 Wilson Staff Model MB or a TaylorMade P7TW, which are more forgiving than their 10-year-old counterparts, are still difficult to hit consistently. These clubs are MEANT to give feedback to the golfer. These clubs are MEANT to be perfect out of the middle, and harsh outside of it. They are true elite players’ tools. Not meant for the hands of beginners.

The worst fear I have of this statement is that it takes the fun out of learning the game. I’ve seen more new golfers quit over frustration than anything else in the game. So in the opinion of this author, telling MOST players to pick up a set of blades is the absolute worst advice you could possibly give them.

A couple of weeks ago, a pretty big story emerged as Rory McIlroy elected to start playing a set of TaylorMade P7CB cavity back irons over his RORS PROTO set of blades.

This was the turning point that the forgiveness crowd had been begging for. Surely if RORY was going to switch to something more forgiving, there’s no reason why any normal golfer should be playing blades.

Well, that didn’t last long. They never actually made it to the PGA Tour, even. Ahead of his debut this week at Pebble Beach, he has switched back into his RORS PROTOS. But, I don’t think he’s done with the experiment yet. I have a feeling that this is going to be the catalyst for a new set of RORS PROTOS. Something we probably still won’t be able to get our normal hands on, but amazing nonetheless. He spoke in his press conference this week about the switch back, and gave a very unique answer.

While diving into his answer requires another article completely, I don’t get the sense from his tone answering the question that he’s giving up on the more forgiving experiment.

Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing what they develop and come up with. Because a cavity-back style iron that doesn’t have as much right bias in it with a little bit of reduced offset… could be quite something.

What about the average consumer?

Today, I ran over to a local simulator joint to test out the theory for myself. I am a +0.3 handicap golfer at the moment, and over the last few years, I have had blades in and out of the bag in one way or another. Some in the bottom end of the set with a combo or flow of cavity backs in the top, and some as full sets. Even now, I have begun the year choosing to play the new Cobra 3DP MB irons. Which are a different animal.

They certainly don’t play like an MB.

The reason I bring this up is not to brag in any way about my own game, but to say that I am probably in the small bucket of people who should even consider playing a blade. For me, at this level in my game, it really comes down to consistency of strike and turf interaction.

Blades or MB models typically have a very small sweet spot. The club heads themselves are much smaller, and getting the center of the face back to the ball isn’t as easy or as generous as something like a cavity-back or larger-style clubhead.

The soles tend to be very thin, so there isn’t much room for error in club delivery. When you have a thinner sole, it tends to go through the turf really efficiently, but it’s also very sensitive to attack angle. Come in too steep, and you’ll get stuck in the ground like a knife. Come in too shallow and your hands will know what the thin sting feels like off the bottom of the club face.

All this is to say that there are so many reasons for even skilled or scratch level NOT to play blade style irons, why would a 10 handicap feel like playing them is the right move? Because some guy in pit vipers on the internet told you to? Bad reason.

Testing the theory

I jumped into a local simulator bay this morning to hit some shots with the new Wilson Staff Model Irons lineup. 2026 brings us a new muscle back blade, a cavity back offering, and a brand new hollow-body in the Staff Model XB. I made sure to snag screenshots of the data, so let’s take a look. First, (out of 10 shots with each club) a look at the best three shots hit with each.

              Foresight Sports

There is nothing really surprising about this data set from hitting a 7-iron of each model. The blade is the slowest and the hollow-body has the lowest spin with the Staff Model CB living right in the middle of the two. Where it starts to develop into more of a story is in the true 10-shot averages seen here.

Here we start to see a bit more separation. As we include more and more shots, the irons start to show their true colors. The worst shots from the Staff Model MB are going to offset the averages to be lower performing than the other two models. The XB and it’s hollow-body design start to really shine as the averages get closer to what the numbers were from the best three shots. And as we look at the worst three shots from each group, the full picture really develops.

Averages of the worst three shots hit with each 2026 Wilson Staff Model iron model

              Foresight Sports

This is where the MB style of iron can really fall apart. Again, I like to think that I am a fairly decent ball striker. I know how to get the club to the ball effectively. But every time I go into a bay and start swinging some blades, I am reminded that I need a little bit more forgiveness in my game. Losing six-to-seven miles an hour of ball speed just can’t happen. That can be a full club of distance on the course!

Why would I subject myself to even thinking that that would be an option if I am trying to get better at golf. Even just the small step up to the Staff Model CB proved to be a fantastic move. The standard deviation in the data between shots was wonderful to see, and it’s still a really good looking package that doesn’t damage the ego at all.

All this for what?

As I stated before, the implication that the average or even recreationally good golfer should be playing blades is absurd to me. Does this mean that I think blades have no purpose in the game? Absolutely not. I have actually seen a fair bit of golfers who “shouldn’t” play blades get fit into them. There’s something to be said for a thin sharp sole and a small form factor. There are players of all skill levels who are going to find success with their delivery using this style of golf club. I don’t want to bucket the blade shape to be for a good or a bad player, just that it needs to be for the right player.

I certainly won’t say that anybody starting out should be anywhere near a blade, unless you’re showing them how far they need to go to truly understand how to hit the golf ball. At that point you’re really just making an aggressive statement, but I’ll allow it.

If you get fit for blades, the I believe in you and I wish the best for your game. Remind me not to bet you for any money, because I’ve made that mistake before. If you haven’t gotten fit for a set of blades and you really want to see what they can or can’t do for your game, make sure you go book a fitting with your local True Spec Golf fitter.
While the previous generation Dynapwr Forged irons were super successful, the 2026 models improve on them by adding a new optimized face thickness with the help of AI. This eliminated the need for the power holes of the previous model.

The variable face thickness helps boost face flex, in turn increasing ball speeds.

Dynapwr Forged also has a new KR-CUP face design, which overlaps the face around the sole, enhancing face flex further, particularly on low strikes.

To help further improve feel in the forged 8620 carbon steel chassis, the cavities in the 3- to 9-iron are filled with urethane to enhance feel.

What is it: A player’s distance cavity back iron with a new AI-designed variable face thickness and urethane-filled cavity.

Who it’s for: Players who are advancing their ball striking ability and want something with a more premium feel without sacrificing forgiveness and speed, or moving to something as compact as a hollow-body.

My take: The final piece of a revitalized lineup

Many people are going to ask if they should choose between the Dynapwr Forged or the Staff Model XB iron. But truthfully, the new Dynapwr Forged perfectly fills a gap between the XB and the standard Dynapwr iron.

The Dynapwr Forged is clearly in that player’s distance category with entries like the P790, JPX 925 Forged, Ti Fusion and many others for players looking for speed and forgiveness.

The Dynapwr Forged is going to fall on the larger and faster end of that spectrum, while the XB falls more in this newer category of player performance.

What’s the difference? I believe it depends on your trend. This Dynapwr Forged is great for a player who is improving and needs to build confidence, but also wants to start getting into the more premium feel. In other words, they are a player who is improving, rather than a player looking to recapture lost performance.

You can still benift from lots of modern technology, like the new varaible face thickness and urethane-filled cavity, but you can also hone in your precision with a more players shape than the Dynapwr irons.

Dynapwr Forged gives Wilson a very complete iron lineup with no one left out. Another step toward the restoration of one of golf’s (and sport’s) great brands.

Wilson Golf is quietly having a resurgence with its latest Dynapwr woods line and new Staff Model irons line released this week. But the sports giant isn’t done showing it can compete with the heavyweights of golf.

The company is adding a fourth model to its Dynapwr lineup with the new Max+ driver, its highest ever MOI driver, crossing the 10K g/cm2 MOI plateau. Wilson accomplished this without making their Max+ head any heavier, a typical strategy clubmakers employ to raise MOI.

“The new Dynapwr Max+ driver takes all the game-changing technology featured in the Dynapwr metalwood family and steps it up yet another notch,” Jared Guttmann, Wilson’s Manager of Advanced Golf R&D, said in a release. “We are dedicated to developing the most advanced equipment for the largest range of golfers — from tour staff and top amateurs to mid to single handicap golfers — and we are confident Max+ will help all players maximize forgiveness and stability to gain a considerable advantage off the tee.”

Keep reading below for more on the Wilson Dynapwr Max+ driver, including my take on the release.

What’s actually new with the Wilson Dynapwr Max+ — and why you should care

With the new Max+ driver, Wilson reengineered PKR-360 (Peak Kinetic Response) face construction from the 2025 Dynapwr drivers to remove 5g of weight from the face of the driver and reallocate it to the rear. This helps push the MOI higher than any other driver Wilson has created.

The crown height was also lowered to push the perimeter mass farther from the CG while lowering it to manage spin. Wilson also has a new rounder face profile to manage gear effect side spin on mishits.

These changes helped the driver achieve the 10K MOI threshold without having to add any mass to the clubhead, something Wilson says is a key differentiator.

“Most, if not all, 10K heads achieve that threshold in part by increasing clubhead mass, as more mass equals more MOI,” Guttmann said. “The downside to this approach is that you slow down the clubhead speed and therefore the ball speed. Our approach in designing the Max+ was incredibly efficient and we were able to maintain high clubhead speeds and high ball speeds, while also driving 10K forgiveness.”

Lastly, Wilson used an advanced topology optimization to fine-tune the sound of the driver with the most effective shaping and internal ribbing.

The new Max+ also added an option for players who want adjustable weighting in a high-MOI driver. Similar to the Dynapwr Max, the Max+ has a rear flippable weight with the ability to move the heavy side from the toe (which is labeled as neutral) to the heel (for draw).

Wilson Dynapwr Max+ Driver

What it is: A High-MOI, max forgiveness driver with a modern player’s profile. A flippable weight in the rear offers two settings between neutral and draw as well as a six-way adjustable hosel.

Lofts available: 9.0˚, 10.5˚(RH or LH), 12˚

Who it’s for: Players seeking high forgiveness from a driver with a traditional profile across multiple speed spectrums without needing to worry about high spin.

My take: A potential unicorn driver

Manufacturers are starting to figure out how to decouple forgiveness and speed, and Wilson is proving it can hang with the big boys in that game too.

I don’t know whether to be more impressed with this driver, or the fact that it’s $150 cheaper than many of its new competitors and $50 cheaper than some of Wilson’s other drivers.

The Dynapwr Max+ is one of these drivers that we are seeing that can be very forgiving yet still not spin, thanks to advancements in CG placement. Previously, that had been reserved for drivers that cost upward of $600, but Wilson has actually done it for less than some of their other drivers.

I enjoyed getting to test it and was pleasantly surprised. Normally, I don’t tend to agree with high-MOI drivers from both a looks standpoint and a spin standpoint. But I was surprised when my first swing was a frozen rope that carried 294 yards and spun 2400.

It’s impressive Wilson was able to place the CG where they did because the Max+ hardly looks oversized to me. I wouldn’t go as far to say it’s a classic pear shape that I’ve been used to playing, but it’s definitely a lot more traditional looking than drivers of this class.

One of the most insane streaks in golf is Wilson staff players winning a major in every decade since the 1920s. Even when that streak seemed in jeopardy in the late 2010s, Gary Woodland came to the rescue at the 2019 U.S. Open, winning the second-to-last major of the decade in his first season with the brand.

So it makes sense Wilson wants to build on that major-winning legacy, but update it with modern enhancements.

In comes the new Dynapwr 2025 line of drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons, boasting AI-driven PKR-360 technology in the woods and PKR Cup face designs in the irons.

Here are five things to know about the new Wilson Dynapwr 2025 line.

1. Three driver models

With the new Dynapwr line, Wilson Director of Global R&D and Product Jon Pergande said the company sought to create a driver family that fit the largest number of golfers. The company believes it has accomplished this by creating three distinct models.

“We’ve listened to feedback from Tour staff, top amateurs and mid to single handicap golfers and we’re confident that the legendary DYNAPWR franchise is entering a new formidable era,” Pergande said.

The Dynapwr LS driver is the most compact driver in the lineup at 445cc, designed as a fade-biased driver to help better players eliminate the left side of the golf course. The shaping of the LS was refined with a raised skirt and a curved crown to make the clubhead more aerodynamic, allowing faster clubhead speeds. Like all the other drivers in the Dynapwr family, the LS features a 6-way adjustable hosel, but unique to the LS and Carbon models are front and back adjustable weights to dial in launch and spin. The LS has the heaviest movable weights (6g and 12g standard) allowing for the greatest CG movement.

Designed to fit the greatest number of golfers is the Dynapwr Carbon driver, which blends forgiveness and workability. The shape was designed in consultation with Wilson’s Tour staff to give the driver a more compact look while boosting forgiveness. The Carbon also has swappable front (3g) and back weights (9g) weights, similar to the LS.

Finally, the Dynapwr Max driver is for those seeking maximum forgiveness. It features a larger footprint to increase MOI and a 19g rear flippable weight to fine-tune the left-to-right bias of the club.

2. PKR-360 and Open Hosel construction

Wilson used AI to create PKR-360, which increased the number of optimizable face and body locations unique to each driver’s design. This results in a larger sweet spot and faster ball speeds across the face of each driver.

Also contributing to a larger sweet speed is a new Open Hosel construction, which strips away material from the heel side of the face, allowing the face to flex more.

“For the sound, we tested up to 40 optimized parameters across the face and surrounding geometries, using more than 2,000 face designs per driver model,” Pergande said.
The PKR-360 tech carries over into the new Dynapwr fairway woods and hybrids. The family has two fairway woods, Dynapwr Carbon and Dynapwr Max, each with different characteristics to fit different players. All three clubs feature a forged 455 face material.

The Dynapwr Carbon fairway wood, as the name implies, features a carbon crown to take the CG lower, along with a 30g fixed tungsten weight, which combines to help produce a penetrating ball flight. An adjustable 6-way hosel featuring Open Hosel construction carries over from the drivers to add customization and fitting options.

They also feature a Velocity Optimization Channel to increase face flex and boost ball speeds.

The Dynapwr irons are a slightly smaller package and feature a hollow body construction to improve stability and maximize distance and forgiveness. They also have Energy Transfer Chassis on the back of the clubhead, which are a supportive frame to further enhance stability.

Meanwhile, the Dynapwr Max irons are a larger package and utilize an Open Heel Construction, similar to the open hosel construction in the woods, which pushes mass toward the toe, moving the CG closer to the geometric center of the club. The Max irons will also feature weaker lofts to help golfers get the ball in the air easier.

Go ahead and pick up the 7-iron in your bag and take a look at the wear pattern on the face. Unless your name is Tiger Woods or Moe Norman, there’s a good chance you’ll find some marks out on the heel or toe. Of the two locations, a heel strike is less common and comes from an inside path generally attached to better players.

We’re not saying a heel strike is the calling card of all better players but as you’ll notice from the list below, the Golf Laboratories swing robot highlighted several iron models geared for elite ball-strikers who miss it in the heel, including the impressive Mizuno Pro 241.

Of course, not every model on this list is a blade. For the game-improvement crowd, Ping’s G730 and XXIO’s 13 saw minimal distance loss on heel strikes when compared to geometric center impact. So, too, did the Blueprint S, a cavity-back model geared for the better player who still needs perimeter weighting for those mishits.

And if you’re wondering whether it’s better to miss it out of the heel or toe with your irons, the clear answer is the heel, according to the robot data. Across the 40-plus models tested, heel strikes averaged just 6.5 yards of distance loss versus 12.3 yards for toe misses. Now you know why better players tend to live in the heel when they don’t pure it.

(Methodology: All testing was conducted with a 7-iron at 80 mph — using the same shaft and attack angle — with six shots recorded from the geometric center and toe. The carry numbers below compare center and heel distances to achieve a carry delta.)

4-PIECE CONSTRUCTION
XXIO 13 Irons feature a low Center of Gravity thanks to their 4-piece construction, which uses titanium faces and tungsten-nickel sole weights. That weighting, combined with our unique Rebound Frame structure which alternates stiff and flexible zones for added ball speed, gives you a satisfyingly high launch with incredible distance.
REBOUND FRAME
Rebound Frame uses alternating layers of stiff and flexible zones to enhance overall COR, creating an effect that acts like a spring within a spring. It adds ball speed and distance to every shot. On the Irons, a thinner face flexes more extensively while perimeter grooves etched deep into the interior of the Iron body add even more flex, especially for shots struck low on the face.

With last year’s launch of the Dynapower woods and game-improvement irons, Wilson put much stock into blending its rich history with the future by creating a product powered by artificial intelligence but named after a series that was launched in 1956.

To build on that momentum, Wilson reimagined the Dynapower Forged iron with a 2024 model that brings together refined technologies with classic looks.

              Ryan Barath

When asked what the newest Dynapower Forged irons add to Wilson’s lineup, Bob Thurman, global GM of golf and VP of R&D, said, “It’s the most powerful players distance iron we’ve ever made and a fantastic addition to the Dynapower lineup. We used a forged 8620 carbon steel material while developing these clubs to provide longer distances and faster-stopping power, but with the softest feel you can have in a golf club.”

Technology and design

The Wilson Dynapower Forged irons feature a variable face thickness that was designed with the help of AI to help produce faster ball speeds and offer extra forgiveness. Each iron in the set has an optimized face geometry to maximize its performance relative to loft and center of gravity.

              Ryan Barath/GOLF

The forgiveness is extended to the sole of the longer irons with what Wilson calls Power Holes, which is a configuration of thin slots that flex on impact to help shots hit lower on the face retain more speed and help to increase launch and extra stopping power.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Dynapower without the classic shape that removes mass from the heel side of the club and places it lower and toward the toe to boost MOI — making this Wilson’s most forgiving players’ distance iron ever.

Sure, we can argue about a lot of things but physics isn’t one of them, which is why this classic design shaping stands up to the test of time.

Even with the proliferation of players-distance irons in the equipment space, better players don’t necessarily want a set of sticks packed with technology throughout the set. If you’re sitting at home nodding along, then Wilson’s Staff Model Blade and Staff Model CB could be in the wheelhouse.

Designed for the golfer who puts a premium on precision, workability, consistency and clean aesthetics (reduced offset and a minimalist look), the Staff Model Blade and Staff Model CB were actually designed together, which means they share several traits and features — even though one is a muscleback and the other a cavity-back.

For example, they are each forged from 8620 carbon steel, one of the softest materials available in the gear space, to deliver a premium feel at impact. They also share Wilson’s Fluid Feel hosel that removes discretionary mass from the lower section of the hosel and repurposes it in the lower section of the head, directly behind the impact location.

Extra mass was also added to the toe and works in combination with the Fluid Feel hosel to reposition the center of gravity (CG) right behind the middle of the hitting area. The mass shift should help alleviate the dreaded left miss better players don’t typically like to see by holding the face open on the downswing. Adding more material directly behind the strike zone should enhance feel at the same time.

“Throughout the development process, we engaged our Wilson Advisory Staff across the Tour so that we could deliver irons that will make them better shot shapers,” said Bob Thurman, global general manager of golf and VP of R&D at Wilson. “Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington is a prime example as he put the new Staff Model CB irons in play for the first time at the TimberTech Championship this past November and won by a compelling seven shots.”

Take a closer look at the face and you’ll find precision milling that, according to Wilson, “allows for longer ball-to-face contact resulting in more consistent spin and increased stopping power” with each shot.

Wilson’s Staff Model Blades ($1,199.99; 4-PW) and Staff Model CB irons ($1,199.99; 4-PW) will be available January 24 and come standard with True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid 115 shafts and Golf Pride Z grips (no-cord).

The driving force — yes, pun intended — for the two new Wilson Staff Model golf balls is its V-COR technology that helps to generate more velocity, especially on shots hit with a direct impact — this means lower-lofted clubs intended to maximize distance.

“Through our internal testing, both Staff Model and Staff Model X golf balls yield faster ball speeds than any other urethane golf ball in their respective class,” said Frank Simonutti, the global director of golf ball Innovation.

Golf ball construction and model variances

Both the new Staff Model and Staff Model X are built with a four-piece cast urethane construction to offer tour-caliber performance, with the Staff Model offering a slightly softer feel than its counterpart the X, and a flatter trajectory on full-swing shots.

As a secondary fitting option, the Staff Model X offers a firmer feel and a higher launch and trajectory on full-swing shots through the bag. “Elite golfers looking for higher velocity and spin will benefit from the ‘X’ model while the new standard Staff Model ball will be the perfect choice for golfers who generate enough spin on their own,” Simonutti said.

The all-new 2023 Dynapower irons build on the original weighting-shifting concept to redefine distance by pulling mass away from the heel side of the club toward the toe where most amateurs tend to miss with their irons. By using an exclusive A.I. modeling platform, Wilson engineers went through thousands of variations of variable face thickness designs for the cavity of the iron to optimize the iron faces through the set and offer optimal performance in every club.

The original Dynapower golf clubs were introduced in 1956 with a set of irons that featured a unique bore-through design that removed unnecessary weight from the bottom of the hosel and positioned it behind the hitting area and towards the toe of the blade for improved forgiveness. In a time when your options for irons included either blades or other blades, this design was a revolution.

By using an exclusive A.I. modeling platform, Wilson engineers went through thousands of variations of variable face thickness designs for the cavity of the iron to optimize the iron faces through the set and offer optimal performance in every club.
