The 2022 Travelers Championship is through 54 holes, and Sunday is shaping up to be an exciting day.

Here’s what you need to know to get caught up on Saturday’s action.

Xander’s personal best

Xander Schauffele’s first 48 holes of the Travelers Championship were, well, flawless. Schauffele didn’t drop a shot over the first 48 holes, carding no worse than par. The bogey-free stretch was his personal-best to start a tournament and helped him climb to the top of the leaderboard.

The streak eventually came to an end when Schauffele made bogey on the par-5 13th, but he bounced back with two birdies over his last five holes to maintain a one-shot lead heading into Sunday.

Cantlay closes the gap

Patrick Cantlay began the day five shots behind Schauffele’s 36-hole lead, but heading into Sunday, he’s just one shot back. Cantlay’s third-round 63 was four better than Schauffele on Saturday, and it has him within striking distance heading into the final round.

“I thought I played really well today — I think lowest of the day,” Cantlay said. “No real mistakes. I could have made a few more putts, but all in all it was a great round.”

Cantlay will be looking for his eighth PGA Tour victory on Sunday, while Schauffele tries for his sixth.

Theegala in the mix

There’s plenty of starpower at the top of the leaderboard, but don’t sleep on Sahith Theegala. The rookie is just three shots back after his third-round 64 and he’ll be looking for his first career win.

“I’m definitely going to be nervous, definitely going to be excited,” Theegala said. “Every single week I’m out here I feel like I’m getting more and more comfortable. So I’m really looking forward to tomorrow.”

Theegala is looking to become just the second rookie to win on Tour this season.

After a textbook birdie at the par-3 11th hole on Friday at the Travelers Championship, Rory McIlroy was sitting pretty. Through 29 holes, he had already reached 13 under and looked to be on his way to a big 54-hole lead. Then, disaster struck.

After a tee shot out of bounds and a squirrely third on the very next hole, the four-time major champion scrawled out a quadruple-bogey 8 onto his scorecard, causing him to plummet down the leaderboard.

Tournaments

Then at 15, McIlroy hit another poor tee shot into a native area, leading to a double.

He made one birdie coming in to finish at eight under, six shots behind leader Xander Schuaffele, but it could have been so much better.

After his round, Rory revealed the culprit of his collapse to reporters: his fairway woods.

“Three fairway wood shots are what cost me,” McIlroy said Friday evening. “For whatever reason I haven’t been comfortable with my fairway woods the last couple weeks. You know, I just hit three loose ones there, two on 12 and then the one on 15. That was really it. I played well the rest of the way.”

But then Rory was asked how he intends to work through his fairway wood issue mid-tournament. Exhausted from his round that had just finished and perhaps frustrated by the way in which it did, Rory provided a blunt solution.

“I don’t know. Just avoid hitting them,” Rory said, continuing, “or go do some work on the range. Maybe spend a little bit of time in the warmup tomorrow hitting them and sort of getting committed to the shots I’m going to need out there off the tees.”

While Rory’s advice to “just avoid hitting them” sounds like a quip, it can actually be a good decision in certain situations.

If a specific club is giving you all kinds of trouble in a round, you might as well leave it in the bag and choose another club for the remainder of the day Then you can work on fixing your problems on the range later on, when your scorecard won’t be littered with crooked numbers.

Veteran PGA Tour pro Jason Kokrak shot a respectable three-under 67 in the opening round of the Travelers Championship. With another solid round on Friday, it looked like Kokrak would be playing the weekend in Connecticut. But his second round did not end as planned, in fact, it technically didn’t end at all.

That’s because after hitting his ball out of bounds, Kokrak picked up his clubs and walked off the course in one of the most bizarre moments in an already bizarre PGA Tour season.

After hitting a long drive on the short par-4 9th hole on Friday, Kokrak’s final hole of the round, the 37-year-old airmailed the green entirely with his approach shot.

But then the play-by-play ends, with no further shots recorded. Why? Because after a brief search for his ball, Kokrak decided to leave it wherever it came to rest and proceeded to walk off the course.

At that point, Kokrak was four over on his round and fresh off a double bogey at the 8th, and he had no hope of making the cut. As a result of his walk-off, he was disqualified for failing to record a score on his final hole and failing to turn in a scorecard.

Rumors quickly spread that Kokrak may have fled the course in frustration, maybe for good on his way to join LIV Golf, but reporter Jason Sobel found otherwise.

In texts with William McGirt, one of Kokrak’s playing partners on Friday, Sobel learned that the group took a long time to determine 1., that the ball was out of bounds and, 2., where the correct drop zone would be. Not wanting to force the group behind them to wait in the fairway, Kokrak decided to pick up and change his MC to a DQ.

Kokrak, who is ranked No. 33 in the Official World Golf Ranking, has three PGA Tour wins in his career, all coming since 2020. The most recent came at the Houston Open in November 2021. In 16 starts this season, he’s missed the cut three times, but this is his first disqualification.

The 2022 Travelers Championship continues on Friday with the second round at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. Here’s what you need to know to watch Round 2 on TV or online.

Previewing Travelers Round 2

Through 18 holes at the Travelers Championship, a familiar face can be found at the top of the leaderboard: World No. 2 Rory McIlroy. McIlroy came out firing in the opening round, collecting eight birdies against zero bogeys for a sparkling eight-under 62.

The terrific start puts Rory in a tie for first alongside J.T. Poston.

But there are plenty of other stars who will give Rory and J.T. a run for their money over the next 54 holes, including Xander Schauffele (seven under), Webb Simpson (six under) and Patrick Cantlay (six under).

McIlroy will kick off his second round Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. ET. You can stream the second round via PGA Tour Live on ESPN+, or watch the telecast on Golf Channel.
